Thank you for this video. I was double minded about cutting the suckers off at the bottom and this cleared it up for me. Now I know why the shoots at the bottom part of the trunk had very different leaves. I have a lilac tree just like this but it blooms thrice during the year with tiny flowers. A beautiful show. I wonder if I should trim it at all, and when is a good time. This is in Ontario, Canada.

If you get a 1 gallon new Ceanothus plant in pot do you, or can you shape it into a tree right away. Like bonsai before or after you plant it. If you want to make it a small tree?

Thanks! Mine stopped blooming maybe two weeks ago. It’s July 5th today. Is it too late to prune (i.e. will I be cutting off new buds at this point)? Or can I still prune? Thank you!

I see you posed this 3 weeks ago. Yes, by July the new growth had already been pretty well set. Cutting it down now will reduce its beauty next year. Its best to do it right after the flowers are done blooming because that is right before the new growth has started. Best to wait until next year if you havent already pruned it.

Andrew Nyberg thanks! I did end up pruning it at the advice of my landscaper. He’s been doing this a while so hopefully it wasn’t too late. We’ll find out next year!

Are they located in a sunny location? They must get direct sunlight for at least 6h or more.
