For beginners, it's often confusing trying to remember which way to turn the barrel adjuster. A good way to imagine it is, spinning it to the right moves the derailleur to the right; while spinning it to the left moves the derailleur to the left. Great video.
@lokmtb8503
4 жыл бұрын
That's a really good way to describe it to beginners. I think the only problem lies with the fact that left or right is relative to the top or bottom of the barrel adjuster. I like to conceptualize what barrel adjuster is actually doing. The barrel adjuster is like a screw so by turning it ccw you're backing it out which tightens the cable and moves the derailleur to the left.
@GroundCRow
3 жыл бұрын
This is way too late, but I remember the right direction by turning the adjuster down (by guiding your thumb downwards along the adjuster) the chain is moving down towards the smaller cogs more easily. Same for going up... No left - right confusion, no confusion what the small or easy gear should be.

This is by far the best derailleur adjustment tutorial I have seen. Very well done and I liked especially that you mentioned and also showed every single step. Most other videos skip some steps, which makes them much harder to follow. It's also really nice that you show both the correct and the wrong settings.

A few tips from my own experience wrenching on my bikes: - Setting the H-limit: Do this without the shifting cable attached. This will ensure that the limit is set by the screw instead of the cable tension. - Don't try to rush it. You'll be amazed how much difference even a quarter turn can make. In addition, if you take the time to do this properly, you probably won't need to touch the H/L/B-limit screw until you change wheel or cassette. - Do a test ride afterwards. Your bike or suspension may twist ever so slightly with the weight of a rider on top. If you take a few tools with you, you can finetune your settings on the go until you're satisfied.

I did exactly this. I just installed a Shimano SLX groupset and I had the derailleur lined up perfect with the highest gear and perfect with the lowest gear. I tensioned the cable and shifted and it still looked good so I installed the chain and everything was messed up. I'm going to give it another try tonight and see if I can fix it but I'm guessing probably not. I've NEVER been able to adjust a rear derailleur and I've been tinkering with bikes now for about 5 years. My routine is adjust it as best as i can, then take it to a LBS and have them fix what i screwed up. So far I've been lucky and the person at the bike shop has been able to fix it on the spot, but that could change tomorrow when i take it to a bike shop. When i called the shop earlier, 20 mins before they closed they said they are booked for a week for bike servicing but I can bring the bike in when they open in the morning and maybe they can take a look at it and possibly fix on the spot as long as it doesn't take too long.

Very informative, useful process. My favorite part was how you explained initial cable tension - I always pull the cable too tight. One comment about 12 speed drivetrains - some have markings or use a tool to set b tension. I mention this as I had a problem getting into my granny, thought it was improperly set limit screw, but was actually derailleur contacting the cassette due to incorrect b screw gap. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

I'm a first time owner of a bike that has gears. I actually followed similar instructions. It was a bit hard on the first bike I built I ordered online but second time around it was a little harder. I think it's because I had to put the bikes upside down via on its handlebars and seat. It wasn't easy trying to switch gears and pedal while trying to look at the rear Derailleur. I think it would've made my life easier if I had a bike repair stand. My advice to beginners, invest in a bike repair stand or build a cheap one..lol. That's my next investment for sure.

Perfect timing and very clear! I just destroyed my derailleur and it’s gonna be good to try this myself instead of taking it to the shop every single time my shifting is off.

To set up H-Screw, it is recommended to have the shift cable released so there's no tension on the derailleur. B - tension screw - there's an alignment mark on the inside surface of the derailleur cage, make sure it's aligned with the tips of the teeth on the largest cassette sprocket

Great job on this explanation. One thing I'd like to add. A drivetrain can also feel out of adjustment if the chain has stretched. No amount of adjustment will get the chain to properly mesh with the gears in this case. Something to consider for anyone with over 800 miles on their drivetrain. The problem with a stretched chain isn't so much that the overall chain is longer. It's that the space between each link no longer matches the space between each tooth on the gears. Hope this saves someone the trouble I recently went through trying to diagnose my drivetrain noise.

This was soooo effective and efficient. I applied the steps to a sram X01 mech that was all out of whack as a result of a crash. Just like you said Kyle, it doesn't matter what brand mech you have, the tuning method will still work! Can't thank you enough for the great content you produce - it is effective, helpful, honest, genuine, and delivered humbly. Thank you Kyle & April!!

Just installed full 11 speed Deore groupo on my wife’s bike tonight and this video was the perfect companion to the Shimano installation manuals!!! Thanks for taking the time to make such a valuable tool for all of the noob bike mechanics out there.

I could watch bike maintenance videos all day (yes I have no social life)😄 I maintain my own bikes and learnt bike mechanics from watching videos like yours and just trying. Last week my wife crashed and messed up her shifting in the center of the cassette but I was able to get it right again. Thanks for sharing Kyle & April...... And yes wife was ok, just some bruising 🙌👍
