Hi there! 👋🤗 I'm currently studying British English at school 🇬🇧 but have a keen interest in American English too 🇺🇸. Sometimes, understanding it can be a bit challenging, especially when it's spoken quickly 🏃💨. I really appreciate your clear explanations-they make such a difference! Thank you! 🙌😊

I'm an English professor from the United States, and I have a small channel that combines gaming + learning English. I often watch other channels that teach English (even if I don't understand the native language!) to get ideas about how different people make content, and I just wanted to say that your videos are super well-made and helpful to learners, I think. You're doing a really good job.

Many years ago, when I was starting to learn English while I listened to The Beatles white album at the same time I read the lyrics in it, one thing that called my attention was the flap sound, which sounds like an r in Spanish (I'm Chilean); so for English speaking learners of Spanish, as an example, if you want to pronounce correctly the r in the Spanish word "clara", you can use the flap sound in the English word better. Thank you, Brittany. Well done. You've got my like and subscription. Sergio.

This video is the very one I needed! Pretty useful is to try to use connected speech while speaking. Because if you speak like a robot, it's hard for your brain to understand that others speak in a different way. I am already on the "didʒə" (did you) step for a year+ watching videos and movies ONLY in English, but the "dʒə" understanding is only on its way 😅 The progress is slow as one can see 😆

Thanks a whole lot from Russian ESL students! Keep up the awesome work! We'd really appreciate it if you could you upload more videos presenting US idioms and slang expressions so that we could start communicating with native American speakers on an entirely different level. Also we'd like to see videos on your great channel featuring samples of job interviews, which is extremely critical for newly arrived immigrants as well as people coming to the US to work for a period of time stipulated in the contract. We are especially interested in customs and traditions as well as rules and regulations a typical American citizen is trying to follow. In addition, it would be great if you could give some valuable advice to new immigrants on where and why they had better settle down in the US in order to land a good job, get married and start a family. Those of us who are planning to get into a romantic relationship with Americans would like to get a better idea about personality traits of an average man or woman born and raised in the US. You're the best! We love you! - American Language Center Moscow, Russia

Timothée Chalamet is C2, he's perfectly fluent in French, he has no Armerican accent. Taylor Switf is more like B2. Great lesson, you've managed to squeeze in all that's needed to understand reductions and connected speech. But the way, I've noted that you tend to pronounce words starting with "str" as if they were "shtr", such as in "stress" which sounds like "shtress". Is it a regional feature? Is it common? Thanks for this excellent video

Mam I'm so confused. 1) Suppose I'm in class 10 and one of my friends is say to me what to do and not in college and reply to him "What if don't pass 10th" or "What if i didn't pass 10th" So what's the difference between these two and what's best to use?? I'm so confused in subjunctive specially in past one. 2) I wish i went or I wish i would go?? 3) My dilemma is here Sir.. *"They wouldn't or might not even know that their house is burglarizedd"* ( in the present somehow i got to know this news and the house owner isn't at home and I'm saying it to myself ) So here I'm not guessing or speculating but just saying it for no reason I mean sometimes we say like this? When we aren't actually emphasizing on something but just express things this way..Even we know they absolutely don't know about it still?? If i used "MUST" then it wouldn't imply that I'm guessing something with strong and firm evidence?? 4) let's say I'm biking to my home and suddenly i encounter a pothole and i have to move aside my two wheeler in no time to avoid it and a lady is behind me on her two-wheeler hit into it and starts quarreling and i say "HOW WOULD I KNOW (in advance) that there's pothole ahead?" So this would be correct? Because ( I'm not talking about any future thing ) I'm saying it for present and it's very obvious, I don't know how to express such a thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong and thanks in advance 🙏

If you watch and listen to a session of Congress, members of both chambers speak so clearly that it's easy to understand. it's the language of the street that's hard to understand sometimes.

The fact is when you look for a job in an American company, you don't aim to work for the Congress. So you have to understand 'normal' people.

You’re right! I do want to make a distinction however between “slang”/casual English and connected speech. They seem similar and are easily confused. Congress/government officials and others in positions of authority usually won’t use slang but they very often do use connected speech. You’ll find many examples of connected speech in their sentences if you listen for them!

@@EnglishwithBrittany Even though I have learned the IPA and I always use it when learning a new word, what you mention is something very particular to American English. So, all those speech modifications in speeches would have to be studied as well because it is not enough to just know the individual pronunciation of each word, since in American English it is common to shorten words to sound more fluid and natural, something that does not exist in British English. I know some (speech connections), but not all of them yet. So, in conclusion, every English learner must necessarily study and learn those connections, because if they do not know them it will be very difficult to understand spoken American English. That is why it is strange and difficult to understand. Americans really like to speak informally making those modifications, something that does not happen in Spanish and that English academies do not teach, not because they do not want to, but because they do not understand it either.
