One note: there's an odd edit in here that conflates the GP constant force monoblock elastic system with high-frequency monoblock oscillators like Zenith/FC/UN. They're not the same thing. Both are monoblocks, but the GP is a constant force silicon remontoir-like system while the others are unitary assortments designed to create super-high frequency for potentially higher levels of accuracy. I repeat; they are not the same thing. Best, Tim

Indeed, the “monolithic”, I believe, was supposed to be a correct term for these compliant mechanisms (the escapement as a single piece of silicone)… At the time of FC’s 810 movement, I was looking for appropriate terminology, and that’s how I came to these. The whole field of physics behind compliant mechanisms is fascinating. Don’t rock. Wobble.

Great video. Love watch tech. I tried to buy the Zenith Inventor - but as you mentioned it became invisible and hidden by the manufacturer.

Just one note. There was some kind of weird edit that segued from the GP constant force escapement to the monoblock high-frequency oscillators (e.g., zenith, UN, F.C). They're not the same thing. The GP is a constant force system similar in concept to the UN Anchor Escapement, and the others - NOT constant force - are designed to raise the frequency of a watch for potentially greater accuracy. Again, they both use monoblock silicon components, but they are NOT the same thing. Best, Tim

Your best video in years for the few of us that care about horological tech, Tim. I could see some glimpses of Jack Forster in you for the first time.

I’m glad to see this subject come up, along with your insights. I was considering making a video, “Wither The Monolithic?” to commiserate over the lack of them, as if everyone who has tried to make one has seemingly walked away, because they’re not being transparent with watch enthusiasts.

Tim, have you considered talking to a coating person in an interview? Or a RIE person? I see a lot of coatings on watches and now RIE is being used for making Si parts. I've been coating and etching for over 3 decades and I think your viewers would get a lot out of having someone explain crystal coatings, DLC coatings, and ion etching technology. And how they all apply along with their practicalities in watches. Keep up the good work!

The photolithography machines necessary to etch MEMS devices like a silicon hairspring from a wafer of monocrystalline silicon cost upwards of tens of millions of dollars. Of COURSE the luxury watch industry would want in on that action.

The Swiss are sitting on the Genequand regulator at least since 2012. Over 100Hz of precision with 60+ days of power reserve and all we have to show for is the Senfine prototype, the Inventor and Frederique Constant's Monolithic oscillator. Actually, I'm aware Citizen tried to extract this tecnology to their watches through Frederique Constant but the Swiss industry actually holds the patent until 2030, as Pierre Genequand sold it to them. So instead of leading by example and keeping themselves at the forefront of technology the Swiss industry is counting with a bunch of lawyers to keep everybody behind. Then in 2029 "suddenly" all Swiss brands will come up with this """""new""""" """""" revolutionary""""""" oscillator, with the rest of the world following suit in 2030.

I just want my budget watches to be as accurate, durable, shock resistant and antimagnetic as possible without breaking the bank. Ofcourse without rubbish, plastic parts. That's all. 🙏

Some kind of COSC Tissot or Mido will do that for you. Check out some of the results of the 2011 and 2013 Concours de Chronometrie to see what's possible with a well-regulated ETA 2824. Best, Tim
