For anyone stuck with a board that doesn't support the aforementioned BIOS flashback functionality, AMD still offers (at least, according to their site) a loaner CPU to those who qualify: www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100#faq-Short-Term-Processor-Loan-Boot-Kit If you've used this service recently, let us know below!

Having just done this process two days ago, my 2c suggestion is to build up everything and try to boot. If it fails, do the flash then. It all depends on which firmware version is on the board as it left the factory. Older stock that sat on shelves for a while won't have a newer version obviously. It's also safe to flash the system with all components in already.

Just a few years ago you could easily swap out the bios chip on a lot of motherboards as they very often socketed. This made it possible to perform something called a hot swap flash if you had access to a working system. You pulled the bios chip from the board you wanted to update. Then you boot the working system on a drive with DOS, the flash utility and the bios image you want to upgrade the non working motherboard to. Use a puller to extract the BIOS chip from the working system WITHOUT TURNING IT OFF! Install the chip you want to flash and run the flash utility. Once that's done you can just power everything down and swap back the original BIOS chips to each system and now your previously non working MB will hopefully POST with the new BIOS. Now I have done that probably more than 100 times and it works, except when you do something stupid such as try to pry the BIOS chip from the socket with the wrong kind of tools and end up damaging the socket, or you short circuit the socket on the live system, though I've never done that. The most common failure is damaging the connectors on the BIOS chip when extracting it, again something that usually only happen if you don't have the right tools. I also have to admit that I've only done this with motherboards of the same model. The flash tools try to verify that the bios you are flashing to is correct for the motherboard, and I'm not certain how they perform that check. If it's by reading some ID from the BIOS chip then it could work across motherboard models, but as I'm pretty sure all modern motherboards caches the entire BIOS for performance reasons that's not a given. There used to be an option to enable or disable this in the BIOS setup, but it's been ages since I saw that option so I can only guess that it's now on by default. Another option was to just have someone else program a bios chip and send you using snail mail.Where I worked we had those chips as hand and just threw one in the programmer whenever someone called us asking about it. They were so cheap that we didn't even charge for the service. A chip cost a few cents and the postage didn't amount to much either. The cost was easily worth it to keep the customers happy. Unfortunately though chip sockets has pretty much gone the way of the dodo, cost cutting and space considerations make it more economic to surface mount two bios chips rather than a single one in a socket. Even so most motherboards only have one bios chip, so be careful when flashing...

This was really helpful Greg. Very clear instructions. Asus should be sponsoring/hosting this, it was infinitely more useful than their troubleshooting/support info.

Hello Greg, I know I'm replying to an older video, but it's exactly what I needed to know. Getting parts in daily from Amazon for a new ASUS TUF Gaming B550-Plus build w/Ryzen 7 5800x. My first ground up build in about 10yrs lol Feels like I'm back in college and cramming for an exam, trying to get all caught up on new tech and parts compatibility and processes. So this video and your concise step by step instructions were perfect. I now have my flashdrive with the renamed .cap file (only) ready to do the Flash Back. My question is, would you suggest doing the flashback prior to build with just the mobo and the PS out of the case on the table? Or should I do the build and basically do it exactly as you showed? My only thought was, that if by chance I had a bad board (happens rarely I suppose) that it would save a lot of time/effort to know early on. :) Any thoughts or opinion would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Hello! How did it work for you???? I’m getting an ASUS B450-F Gaming II MOBO. I’m going from an Intel I7-7700k -> Ryzen 5800x. So I don’t have a backup Ryzen to check my MOBO’s BIOS. My only question is how do I KNOW I need a bios update? I’ve seen from others the MOBO Box will say “5000 series ready” on it. But I feel like that’s leaving it to the hands of people I most likely can’t trust lol I suppose if it does arrive this week with that sticker on there, I’ll just fire it up with only the PSU/CPU/RAM installed to see if it posts to BIOS?? Thank you!!

@@hunterrivera4984 Hello, it worked perfectly! I decided to flash/update the bios prior to the build. So just the mobo and power supply. (2 power cords for my mobo) On the mobo there's a bios number printed near the ASUS name, mine was 1401 I believe. So it looked like it would support the 5800x, but I decided to go ahead and update to the latest, in case there was any new/er optimizations. On the ASUS website, look up your mobo and go to the Driver & Utility Tab and scroll down the listed bios files. And compare it with your number. Most likely, my guess is that your board will support it. I was just being overly cautious (paranoid? lol) Best of luck! \m/ btw - watch a few "bios flashback" videos to be familiar with the process just in case ;)

@@midknightgeek6629 awesome! I appreciate the advice. My processor/ram/MOBO come in on Thursday so I’m stoked to run this system in all its glory! Been watching videos left and right cause going from Intel to AMD is quite a mess to be made if not done correctly. Will most likely wipe my SSD (Thats backed up to my HDD), and simply use the M.2 as my main boot drive with a fresh windows install. Plug those other SATA drives back in after everything is setup and good to go. So it’s basically safe to use the BIOS flashback no matter what as soon as I open the box? Even if my MOBO was updated to the latest already? I’ve downloaded the latest BIOS update already, but will check out my Board once I get it. Appreciate it!!

every 5000 series buyer needs to get a Motherboard with (Flashback) feature if they don't already have a 3000 or older CPU. If not, they won't be able to use their new CPU.

What timing, i have all my parts except gpu and cpu, and im wondering can i just plug in the mobo and update the bios then put it back? Since i really want to build the pc from the beginning when i have all my parts. Like i dont want to build as much as i can now, then slot in the cpu and gpu as i get them. Also btw u forgot to link the flashback instructions in the description

Aside from the fTPM issue currently plaguing many AMD processors and such, I have no system issues, but unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't have Flashback. :/ So I'll have to go about it the old fashioned way, especially once AMD rolls out that fTPM fix later this year.
