Thanks for this. I've been seriously considering doing this to my garage. I'm thinking that I'm going to bypass the ballast and install additional lights that would be T5 compatible and bypassing them, nut leaving the option open to use T5 in the future. I appreciate the Power comparison, showing how the Ballast are still using power compared to the LED bulb itself.

I bought a six pack of Barrina LED Shop Light Fixture 8ft off of amazon for about $130, about the same price as it would have been to fix the existing lights and is so much brighter!

I bought 6 of the Harbor freight LED shoplights every time they had a coupon and outfitted the entire shop with them. I cut the cords off and just ran whips to them. Simple and cost me a total of 120 beans

Same. The HF LED shoplights are great. Have hardwired some and plugged in others.

They really made a difference in those old four foot ballasts.

Just wanted to let you know I ordered the frosted bulbs as you suggested. The conversion was a little more complex as I did not have a ballast but instead a transformer and capacitor. Luckily the instructions were clear and the bulb conversion is complete. Thank you!!

All things being equal light wise.... The leds will last far longer and won't be affected by a cold garage upon start up...

It depends on the quality of the bulbs. I purchased some LED bulbs that only lasted 4 months.

So what was the kWh usage on the ones where you bypassed the ballast?

I didn't have a way to test those ones since they are hardwired.

I have I forget how many of the old bulbs in my garage, think I'm not going to do any retrofits, just get the 4 bulb units from Harbor Frieght, they can be linked up to 4 fixtures, I have the 2 bulb model & 4 bulb model for 1st try test, and I'm gonna bite the bullet & slam the ceiling with the 4 bulb models

I have one of the new 5500 lumen lights from Harbor Freight over my workbench. I've been happy with it.

It's surprising how much more expensive T8/T12's rated for ballast bypass are....but I do think that may be the better way to do it, especially for the future. No haggling with bad ballasts, just put in a new light when one goes. I went cheap and got the Great Value ones not rated for ballast bypass. Mixed opinions.

It depends which ones you get, the number of bulbs, etc. I waited for a sale and paid like $6.75 per bulb for a multi-pack.

Thanks for the video. Did you get a reading on the consumption for a fixture with the ballast bypass?

Why not just get the standalone LED 'tubes' that connect with a plug? It looks like for the hanging fixtures you have, the outlet is right there. These tubes come with connector wires so that you can string additional tubes. It seems like junking the old, heavy, clunky fluro fixtures would be a win. I've been happy with the standalone tubes I put in the garage. I have 6 all fed from one switched outlet in the ceiling that I converted from an original single bulb socket.

Only those two hanging fixtures have a plug. Everything else is hardwired. It would have been a lot more work to tear out the hardwired fixtures and install outlets.

Could've gotten 300 of the free Harbor Freight flashlights and batteries and just stuck them to your existing fixtures instead of buying new bulbs. :-)

I'm actually working on this now... I'm not replacing lights I'm buying the first time but deciding on what wattage I really need.... T8/ 72 watt or 144 Watt......🏁 I'm just buying the tube that direct light 160 degrees and installing that.... no need for housings you can mount these flush against the ceiling for a nice clean look ....12 year warranty..
