So what’s the difference between stamped approved poly, and a random poly? We don’t have approval in the UK, it’s just thinner than DPC
@HouseImprovements
5 жыл бұрын
I have no idea in The UK but North America has polys approved for air/vapour barriers and polys just for general use. It would have to do with the Perm ratings and testing

The way I perceive moisture in a warm and moist environment, and a bathroom is a good example, and where the exterior is for some month a really cold environment, the moisture is not going to migrate through the dry way. With insulation in the wall, and also the foam board on the outside, no moisture will migrate to the exterior sheathing plywood or other wood substrate, where it would condense and create havoc. Maybe even rotting out studs. If the moisture would condense it will under the drywall. But with the poly, moisture, which loves to migrate to a place of moving exchanging with dry air, will stay put inside of the bathroom. If you have a good deal that stops air exchange, I believe it should be all good. You do need an air exchange system in a sealed box.

I guess if you make a bathroom like here in Sweden where it has it's own completely water proof layer, a vapor barrier would be unnecessary and perhaps trap moisture. Around windows and lights there is a problem though.

No building or lumber yard has any plastic I can find that says approved for vapor barrier !!! 6. Mill yes but nothing certified or advertised as vapor barrier. The 6 mil I see in stores is for under slabs and things and is opaque and is very heavy to put on walls and ceilings. 😵

Do you live in an area where you are required to have a air/vapour barrier? If you are then they sell it for sure.

I'm very confused about the use of a vapor barrier. The moisture in the air still has to go somewhere (a vapor barrier doesn't remove moisture). By adding a barrier you've just given that moisture vapor a place to condensate onto and become a liquid instead of being released into the air and out through the roof vents (assuming proper attic ventilation). Or it will just migrate to the path of least resistance which would be into the walls that don't have a vapor barrier, through the door opening etc.

This is a very good point and something I considered for a VERY long time. In the North you want a vapor barrier on the inside. In the South you want it on the outside. So in the North where I am you want to stop the heat from escaping through the wall. Condensation is then only an issue on the outside you want a waterproofing membrane that will let that breathe. Tyvek does this and does not let water in. DO NOT USE BIG BOX STORE VERSIONS. As far as Zip systems, I still don't trust them. You have to seal all screw holes and all seams. Does it breathe outward? I still don't know the answer. Back in the old days things weren't so sealed so condensation wasn't an issue. Now that things are so tight it is an issue.

Vapor can’t condense until it hits a cold surface. The poly is on the inside of the wall assembly so it never really gets cold in winter. The vapor barrier is there to prevent the vapor in the air from making its way to the exterior sheathing and condensing because the sheathing will be cold being on the exterior side of the wall assembly.

Hi Shannon I am doing some Reno's on our bungalow. The old roof insulation was vermiculite and has been removed professionally. They also removed the ceiling vapour barrier 🤔🤔 So now have Plaster board/ Type of ceilings and no vapour barrier between joists. Do I have to drop my ceilings or is there another method to install a vapour barrier. Appreciate uour advice, great videos across all the trades 👍👍

If you have plaster you never had a vapour barrier originally. Maybe black paper, but I doubt you even had that. Please post your question in the forum and we can discuss this project better there.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

As always good video. This in not related to the video but I'm about to start a new project of replacing my cedar siding to manufactured stone. ( versetta stone). Wondering should I remove the cedar laps( not a shake style) or go over it with some rigid material( 7/16 osb) then wrap the house and even considering going over the wrap with 30 lbs felt paper. Your opinion much appreciated.

Shannon, many people are now saying "never put plastic in your walls!" in terms of 6mil poly. How can I decide if it's right for my application or not?

Your local codes will dictate that depending on your location. There are newer products now called "smart" membranes and they will allow the wall to breath if it needs to. Don't ask me how ,LOL
@KennyFlagg

If you’re air conditioning the building, use a smart membrane. Certainteed Membrain, intello sold at 475 building supply, and siga majvest are some options. This allows the wall to dry inward during hot seasons.
