Thanks, Pappy! Since making this video, I also use a second room-temperature server, but my second container is a standard butter dish. I use the butter bell for getting butter to spread on foods, and I use the butter dish for butter for cooking. Seems to work well, and when the butter dish gets low, I put the remainder into the bell and put a new stick in the dish.

I have a regular crystal covered butter dish I keep at room temperature which makes it easy to eyeball the right size for a 1 or 2 Tbsp of butter for a recipe. Alternate method: fill the bell with cold chunks of butter. Place the cylinder over it so the whole thing is upside-down. After the butter softens, smoosh it down with the back of a spoon, invert, and place in the cylinder you have no filled with the right amount of water.
@sweetcanada17

Mae Zeppa - that defeats the purpose of this thing. The point of the water is to prevent critters, bacteria, mould and other things to get to the butter. The way you described it, you may as well just use a traditional American butter dish. Something like in these pictures: www.google.ca/search?q=butter+dish&rlz=1CDGOYI_enCA640CA640&hl=en-US&prmd=isnv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwic9KGt29fVAhUKjVQKHUwJAkcQ_AUIESgB&biw=375&bih=591

@DavidsTutorials
Жыл бұрын
@@IdratherbeinHobbiton Hey, here's something I have not yet put up as a video (but I might soon) - the absolute BEST grilled cheese sandwiches are made with (real) sourdough bread. If you can find it. Not the kind that simulates sourdough by adding vinegar to the recipe, but the real kind like from San Francisco, made with a rennett starter. Generous (real) button on both outsides, and you can add other things if you like (such as a sprinkling of dill weed or some thin-sliced tomato), but just a plain ol' grilled cheese on real sourdough is to die for. Restaurant-worthy - but they won't do that because most restaurants think grilled cheese is for kids and make it the cheapest way possible. I think Cracker Barrel restaurants used to have good sourdough, but I haven't checked in the last few years. Try your grilled cheese this way and let me know what you think. Take care.

@DavidsTutorials
11 ай бұрын
Hi, Amyk5260. When the first one I had broke, I bought a replacement on Amazon. The bell did not fit inside the well, and I returned it. The next one wobbles a bit when in place, but not bad enough to replace it. If I have to replace this one, I think I'll go to a flea market or a thrift store, where I can actually put hands on the thing to see its quality before purchasing it. If the one you have wobbles just a bit when put together, I'd say that's no big deal. But if it truly rocks back and forth, I'd send it back and write a scorching review on the product, warning others not to buy this item unless they are okay with shoddy workmanship. I don't like being negative, but if it keeps someone else from feeling they wasted their money, I feel it's better to let them know.

Cool to see tutorials and useful info from an older guy like yourself, gives me hope if I ever reach your age. I'm considering buying a butter bell since some of my butter went bad in a glass tupperware container after I left it out for a week not knowing as much about butter as I thought. Apparently butter in a butter bell can last up to 30 days? but that is to say, do you have to wash it out every 20-30 days or whenever you empty it? or do you just keep adding new butter when you get low? I feel as though if my butter went bad, any small remnant in the dish could go bad even if the bulk was newer. My grandparents always had their butter in a covered dish on the counter, I never noticed my grandmother washing it, but their butter never went bad, so I was very surprised when my own did.

Question: Is it important to have contact between the butter and the water? That is, when the butter has been half used and diminished, should I increase the water level in the base? thanks!
@Broken_robot1986

@Ainslee Umlah Nah yo, the water doesn't touch the butter. There is a bubble of air between them. Imagine or test by filing a big bowl with water, and then putting a see-through glass into the bowl upside down. You;ll see the water does not go up, into the glass unless you let air escape.
@DavidsTutorials

Ainslee, Christopher is correct. If you have a large transparent glass, fill it 2/3 with water, then invert a smaller (empty) transparent glass and push it gently down on the water in the bigger glass. You'll see how the air in the smaller glass keeps the water out. Sorry for the delay in responding (it's a YT thing), but I do appreciate your comment.

As far as I know, just use clean water and you'll be fine. The butter should never touch it.

It is always a question whether to add music or not. Sometimes it makes a video better, sometimes it just gets in the way. I know people out there in KZitem land feel strongly both ways. I'm still undecided, and much depends on the content of the video.

that's sad. and weird. I had a friend with a big dog yard of sled dogs and it's not uncommon for mushers to buy huge restaurant jugs of oil and feed big bowls of it to the dogs on a semi regular basis.
@DavidsTutorials
6 жыл бұрын
That's understandable. If it's the right kind of oil and combined with adequate proteins that contain canine-essential amino acids, it will give the dogs far more nourishment and ENDURANCE than any diet containing grain products. Dogs are carnivores and were not made to consume vegetable products.

You simply have to mash the butter into the bell more firmly. Maybe try it about a quarter of the amount at a time?

so is there a column of air between the butter and the water or is the surface of the butter in contact with the water?? Also, is this better than just a standard butter dish with a lid?
@DavidsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay in responding (it's a YT thing), but I do appreciate your comment. To answer your questions, yes, the "bubble" of air keeps the water from contacting the butter. And I actually use both the dish and the bell. I use the bell for spreading butter on things like pancakes and fresh bread, and I use the dish for chopping off a chunk of yummy for cooking. What’s stopping the butter from sliding into the water after using it a couple times?
@DavidsTutorials
Жыл бұрын
Hi, LarenaWalsh3554! You should be sure the bell is dry before mashing the butter into it. That way, the butter will stick to the smooth ceramic of the bell and won't detach and go into the water. Good luck and have fun!

Wait, what do you mean "it will displace the water"? If I put too much water, i.e.: higher than the most outer layer of the butter in the bell, won't the butter submerge into the water? ... Or is butter supposed to be submerged; and of so, won't the butter begin to mix into water?
@DavidsTutorials

Nope, not at all. To check it out put water into a glass bowl, then turn a small clear glass upside down and push it down into the water. You'll see the water does not go into the glass.

I live in the SE USA, where it gets quite warm. I should think any temperature where you can live comfortably would be fine. However, it might be worth testing, just to see. Let us know if you find a temperature where the butter releases from the bell.

I think as long as the butter is not liquid, it will stay in the bell. The key is to press it firmly into the bell so there is no air gap on the sides or bottom. Try it and see.

Enough to cover the rim of the bell when it's inverted into the well. It doesn't matter if it's a bit more than that, because the air inside the bell will keep the water away from the butter.
