Learn a bunch of tips for using a crosscut saw to process trees into long burning yule logs. I chose to not do any fast-forwarding of the actual cutting so you get an idea of what it takes. Keep in mind I still have a lot to learn about sharpening and maintenance, so the saw is not as well-tuned as it could be. I'm still focusing on form and treating it as a workout until I have time to learn more about the saw itself and buy more tools to that effect. Until then, trying to perfect my form and use all muscles of the body in equal proportion.
I bought this crosscut saw about a year and a half ago and I couldn't find a good crosscut saw tutorial anywhere as far as body mechanics and the actual sawing process, at least aside from competition-related advice which is not necessarily relevant to sawing over several hours.
00:15 - Background behind buying a crosscut saw, why I'm making this video.
02:05 - Overview of bucking sawhorse, (1) at about hip height, (2) stabilizer to reduce rocking and vibration, (3) chains on legs to keep it from collapsing.
02:57 - Importance of optimizing log size to fit perfectly into your fireplace or furnace.
04:03 - How to lock the log down using a torsion knot.
05:32 - Importance of using a bark spud to remove bark before cutting.
07:35 - Chipping out a V-shaped guide groove with a knife and baton.
08:30 - Starting the cut. No particular strength or technique applied here. Just initial penetration.
09:22 - Alright initial cut is deep enough, so going over some initial tips for the actual sawing. (1) Using every tooth of the saw equally, (2) using a counterintuitive "thumbless" grip.
11:02 - Getting the cut a little deeper, going slow to get/give a feel for the motion.
12:57 - Ready to start really going at it, so let's get into body mechanics. The difference between crosscut saw competition vs. "sawing all day" mechanics. Relating to various yoga poses, ideal 90 degree hip rotation, but at least 45 degree rotation. Alternating butt clench. Ideal hand position. Using the "rope from the shoulder" visualization for pulling the saw back, to avoid wasting bicep energy. Having gravity help you as much as possible. How to match your breath to the stroke.
16:26 - Using a solvent like Desolvit can help mitigate saps/oils in the wood sticking to the saw blade. Kind of like a lubricant.
17:07 - Enough talk, let's get halfway through the log.
21:00 - About halfway through the log, switch side/hands to avoid becoming a twisted mess after lots of cutting.
21:35 - OK finishing the last half left-handed.
23:42 - How I would drive a wedge into the crack once the saw got deep enough, but at this point the saw can't get deep enough, so I keep going.
26:17 - It's now deep enough to get a wedge in there to make the saw bind less.
26:35 - OK continuing cutting again.
27:10 - Alright, TIMBER!
27:26 - Overview of the Black Birch Yule Log we now have. Should get about an 8 hour burn from this one in my fireplace. Record for me is a 12 hour burn. Not bad for about 10 minutes of cutting!
27:59 - Going over all the things I still have to learn. How to mitigate vibration on the pull back, how all my cuts are slightly diagonal, meaning wasted effort, and of course I still have lots to learn about maintaining the saw itself.
29:31 - Philosophy being "wanting" my saw to be dull for now. It forces me to perfect technique, which I still have much to work on.

Note that these manly men go through a log much faster than I, but (a) they're optimizing body mechanics for a "sprint" and going 100%, (b) they've fine-tuned their saws like crazy to the particular wood they're using, (c) they're using a much softer pine wood than the dense black birch I'm dealing with.
