This gramophone feels so premium with the black "His Master Voice" soundbox and the brake lever click sound, everythings feels like this is the right way to listen to music...

Thanks 👍 😀. It was the first floor standing machine I bought, and I really didn't know what I was buying! It does play very well and looks good, though has been restored using modern synthetic varnish by a previous owner. You may also notice it has incorrect screws holding down the motor board. It lives in my workshop and is my main machine for all sorts of videos 😀

@@mrrgstuff does it has any suspension? It looks like the 70s Garrard top plate mounted on springs...
@mrrgstuff

No, there is no suspension, though I know what you mean. I think due to the ridged pipe between the tonearm and the horn it was probably not practical to put suspension in, though maybe some machines had it 🤔. Thanks 😀👍

Very useful to someone new to collecting & as we're sadly a 'dying breed' we need all the newcomers we can get. What other antique speaks, sings, gives musical entertainment & even tells of social history in songs or monologues? Think new collectors should know not to trust speed indicators/controls, which may be out of calibration. Also, really old records may deviate from the 78 rpm norm. A laser tachometer, or mobile phone rpm app is very useful. Finally, varying the needle depth in the holder has some effect on volume & compliance. Maybe that belongs to a more advanced video. That said, I have observed that some reproducers allow deep insertion of the needle. Where this is the case, I feel record damage (esp. with a loud tone needle) & sound impairment may result. Ever thought of making a video to encourage new collectors? Have noticed a fall in prices of records & machines as demand has reduced, making the hobby more accessible to newcomers.

Thanks very much for the comment 👍 😀. Good points you make there, and I did pretty much skip over the speed control 😅. It's certainly a video topic I could revisit as there is so much which could be said, and as you may have noticed I struggled a bit to really explain how much to wind a machine and how to tell 🤔. I haven't thought about an introduction to collecting video, but that is a good idea. I'm not sure even what sort of collector I am 🤔. I try to stay off ebay and any online or live auction places and just pick up machines in the wild. I found some more recently, but had to leave them as I just don't have the space 😕. Thanks 👍😀

@@mrrgstuff Believe I've reached my limit re machines, but if the occasional really different/unique/highly interesting one comes along, I'll 'shoehorn' it in! Tend to stick to record fairs, but there's a local hospice retro shop that has interesting stuff from time to time. Also handy to donate surplus stuff.

I'm 17, started a year ago with the purchase of a banged up Decca 10 portable that I had to fix by myself (I live in the gulf countries of Arabia, where the oldest thing we have are cassettes). This channel right here gave me a lot of insight on the hobby, and I am happy with my pursuit of it. If I ever get the chance to go to Britain, I am camping a record store to satisfy my insatiable desire for more.

Very thankful you said that they only accept certain records. I had gotten mine from my grandfather, and I was planning to put a Doors record on it. Mine is a Decca, and I don’t know how old it is.

I really don't know how subscribed channels disappear from my list. After your nice comment on my video, I wanted to see what you'd been up to, and you weren't on my list along with some other channels?? Very odd. I don't own an old phonograph but the stenciling and artwork on the labels really strikes my fancy. Just great designs from that era. 😁

I’ve heard different opinions on this question……… Is it best to leave a half wound gramophone or let it completely run-down after use ? Send me your loud tone needles if you don’t want them 🙂-I always only use loud tone
@dogsbody49

It is good practice to let the gramophone unwind after playing the last record..

Interesting that you only use loud tone 🤔 Is that purely for the loudness or are there other benefits? Personally, I don't let gramophones wind down completely as the springs in theory can unhook, but if I don't plan to use it in the immediate future, I will try to run it mostly down. Thanks 👍 😀

Why is it considered bad to play 1950’s era shellacs or later ones on an early Gramophone? I’ve been playing 1920-1940’s even some 1950’s shellacs on my 1911-1912 Gramophone, no problem whatsoever and the record is absolutely fine. Regards, TM.

i am so grateful for such videos...i loved gramophones since i was a small kid,i never heard a working gramophone in my life and i think recorded videos won't do the feeling you would get from hearing it live. i am working so much in order to find a good working one,but in my country,most of these stuff along with war relics are thrown away or left to rot

Glad you enjoy the videos, I have a lot of fun making them, too! 😀 You are right. They do sound better live. I made this recording after just fixing the machine, and it was amazing standing next to it and hearing it play: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qJehrKZ5oWeUm34 Good working gramophones can be hard to find, especially if you want one with a big external horn. There are modern fakes, but are poor quality and don't sound as good: kzitem.info/news/bejne/kqSwzI6pi6N3aJw Probably the easiest type to find, at least in the UK, are portables. They vary quite a bit in quality (as do other machines), but still sound pretty good: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l4-prJiqgqxzlpw Thanks 👍 😀

I realised after uploading that I had used a picture of the used needle tin from the HMV130 which had rusty needles in it. These wouldn't have been rusty when they were used to play a record, but became rusty over the years the machine was in storage. The new needles I show in the little plastic bag, really are new. There are people still making and selling new needles now. Thanks 👍 😀
