I currently use a Gitzo Monopod, however any monopod that is sturdy should do the trick. You may want to look at Really Right Stuff. I have some of their equipment and I like it very much. As far as avoiding camera shake - just run the ISO up to level that gets you shooting at 1/500 or faster and/or use a flash.

My Manfrotto pod must be 30 years old and I frequently use it when traveling from hide (blind) to hide on my mobility scooter. It’s a lot easier to use on my scooter giving me the ability to get shots I would otherwise miss. There seem to be two distinct types made today, those for photography and those for videography which are bulkier with feet I can see of more of an hindrance with wildlife photography. But not having bought one for 30 years I could be wrong. It’s great to see someone pushing the advantages of this brilliant, but comparatively cheap, piece of kit.

I have the Manfrotto 561b its great for holding pro camera's. Non carbon if you need very light weight this is not the one and too noisy to setup for wildlife. What it is good for is quick shutter speed still photography, the arm is a good for resting on a solid object for more space around the camera and slower shutter speeds.

Just a thought Terry, why not use a wireless trigger for the camera when you extend the monopod over your head for the elevated shot instead of using the camera self timer? You could even be on continuos shooting mode and not have to repeatedly bring the camera back down to reset the auto timer and then elevated again for the next shot.

Great comment I've not heard others make. "You could still be shooting at 1/200 sec, it's not for stability, it's not for camera shake". I've recently purchased a M43 100-400 lens (200-800 FFE) which with my camera it just under 5 lbs. Since I do a lot of woods walking, I'm now in the market for a good sturdy monopod. For shutter speeds I generally start at 1/1250 or 1/1600 (if lighting allows of course). Thanks for your video...

Which tripod/monopod are you using in the video? The one you have looks nice. Can you recommend a quality one to buy?
@tv510
5 жыл бұрын
Kind of a long answer for a simple question. Like all support purchases, (tripods, monopods, etc) the tradeoff is cost versus features. The one I use a Gitzo (1588MK) that I have had for over a dozen years. It's carbon fiber so it is lightweight, a must for me lugging equipment around. However, if you spend a fair amount on a good monopod, it's likely that you won't need to buy it again. In comparison, I have had 4 new camera bodies since I bought my monopod. It's not a product you have to upgrade. That being said, they are expensive for quality monopods. Here is what is out there today that I can recommend: Really Right Stuff: www.reallyrightstuff.com/MC-14-Mk2-Carbon-Fiber-Monopod ( have several of their tripods and RRS creates a fantastic product. Gitzo: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1286942-REG/gitzo_gm4562_series_4_carbon.html/?ap=y&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhPfkBRD0ARIsAAcYycGurxxZCVdSwrAH0ql47EnDg9ocGZejsFoDkEivCtu2HVX8Z0CrHoAaAu09EALw_wcB&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=Y I used an older model for several years and love it. There are some Manfrotto monopods that are out there that could work for a lesser price, but you give up function and weight. Don't forget to get a head for it. It will make using a monopod faster and more functional. Hope this helps.

@tv510

Hi SuperLinux, thanks for watching. I don't think it would be a good idea to hammer the monopod into the ground. The whole idea of a good monopod is to be able to stick and move. Unlike a tripod where you are committed to that spot. You wouldn't want to be trying to pry out the monopod from the earth when a 200 lb running back is barreling down on you. Good luck!

Sir, First of all thanks for the tips on using a monopod. I am thinking of buying either a monopod or Flycam 5000 (cheaper glidecam duplicate). Could you tell me their few pros and cons relative to each other so that I can decide on one thing ? Taking shots while walking, make the monopod feed shake in vertical direction while flycam 5000's feed is smooth. Is this correct ?
@tv510
9 жыл бұрын
Rishikesh Bagwe Here's what I can tell you about both. The monopod is excellent for stills as it will allow you to shoot with a slower shutter speed than hand held. For video, it will stabilize your shots much better than hand held. The Fly Cam or Steady Cam, Glide Cam (as I have used) will create a very soft, floaty feel to the footage, but is pretty much useless for stills. Setting up a monopod will take only seconds, setting up a Steady Cam unit will take quite a bit of time initially and several minutes upon each use. With a steady cam set up, you have to balance the rig perfectly, every time. The positioning of the camera, slightly off, or even the addition of a filter will set the balance askew. Next, the steady cam can become quite heavy, as you are holding it away from you body, using your arms to help cushion the movements. With one of those units, vests are available to take the weight off of your arms and put it on your shoulders and hips - though that system can get pretty pricey. There is a learning curve on using the Fly Cam where a monopod can be used out of the box. I would suggest using a dedicated camera (the most lightweight one you have) attached permanently to the fly cam as you won't have to spend as much time balancing it each time you want to use it. Go rent a fly cam or steady cam or glide cam - I know Borrow Lenses has them, and use one for a weekend. Once you master the set up and use, take your camera off and set it up again. The set up is where you will spend a lot of time. You will be able to tell over a weekend if that is something you want to work with. The footage you get is fantastic, but it is quite a bit of work and very heavy over time. Good luck.
