I know this is kinda rudimentary for a lot of folks, but I appreciate you doing this series. I use a multimeter so infrequently all the settings icons still look like hieroglyphics - a tool everyone needs to have on hand and should have more familiarity with.

I came in with one questions, and three off them got answered at the end of the video. Thank you! 9:10 That pin is meant to push something, I'm guessing it's some kind of "safety" feature of the device it's meant for. So when that pin breaks off, the device will not charge.

Brilliantly explained for the novice. I actually only needed to know the polarity of the meter, not the device, but learned so much more on watching. Particularly the Lenovo adaptor polarity/strengthener pin/actuator. Thank you.

The centre pin is the "ID" pin. It is neither positive or ground. It's what tells your device that the correct charger is attached and that it is safe to draw power from it and charge the battery. Without that centre pin (or if it gets worn out or broken, as they often do eventually) your laptop will still be able to use the cable to provide power to your laptop, but it will not charge the battery.

It's really cool for you to make these, even if they seem a little boring or rudimentary to some. I spent too long without using a multimeter when I first started, just because I didn't know how essential it was until I smoked something!!! Thanks Joshua!

Thank you so much for posting this. The part about polarity just helped me figure out why my LED landscape lights weren't working after I did some re-wiring: I had the polairty reversed. I never knew that the negative sign before the voltage on the meter screen indiciated reversed polarity. This video is great !

It may be already noted in the comments somewhere here, that the power supplies for guitar effects pedals are overwhelmingly center-negative. So much so, that I'm sure there must be some overlying reason for it. But anyhoo, this a very helpful video; really enjoyed it.

There is a resistor from the center pin to ground in the lenovo plug ;) It's for detecting what kind of power pack it is from what i can see. 285ohm means a 65W supply, 548ohm means a 90W supply.
@JoshuaBardwell

But why did I measure zero ohms between the pin and ground then?
@JohnNorrbin

That i don't know. I saw the thinkwiki where are the lenovo geeks hang out and saw this: www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Power_Connector They have a table there for the signal pin.

Oh, did you measure 0hms to the wire you made? or to the power pack? That would be the difference. I think the resistance is not in the plug itself, but in the power supply.

If you want your cable to act like the biggest power pack, you can add a resistor to your home made cable to simulate a 170 W power adapter with a 1.9 kΩ resistor.

The signal on pin 2 (center pin) is what signals the capacity if the charger. (no signal = 90W) If you use the charger on a machine with discrete graphics, it will think it is a 90W charger and the charger may overheat.
@JoshuaBardwell
7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I don't follow. Can you elaborate?
@mrmcgowan2
7 жыл бұрын
This was a copy paste from a lenovo support thread. I read it as, the laptop will measure (something*) of the center pin to determine what the wattage of the power supply can provide. Therefore a laptop with a big honkin graphics card wont try and suck a lot of current and smoke an under rated power supply. *Edit: Not sure what or how it would meassure/signal

Let us say that you have two wires with a low DC voltage between them. You want to determine the polarity but you forgot your multimeter at home. Then you wet your thumb and index finger and hold on to one of the wires. Touch the tip of your tongue with the other wire. If the voltage is at least 3 V you will experience a salty feeling if you are licking the positive wire and nothing if it is the negative one. You do not need to try this at home because this is where you keep you beloved multimeter.

Hi there my friend I'm using a Coleman 40 w solar panel it's all hooked up properly but when I test it it shows a negative reading on the multimeter when I connect the positive and negative terminals to the multimeter. Only when I reverse do I see a positive voltage reading. What can you say about that?
@JoshuaBardwell
3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that's because the panel is designed to push current into the battery. So the voltage is backwards from how a battery discharges.

Is the answer that the center pin isn't connected to anything and thus it would have no continuity and no volts?
@JoshuaBardwell

No, because it would be floating then. You wouldn't get any consistent voltage reading.
@BamRamirezFPV

damn, thought it would end up being something super simple like that, didn't know you'd get inconsistent voltage rating that way. I always learn something from you man, thanks for all the great work you do for the hobby!
@michaelwilkes0

I actually think this a perfectly reasonable guess. If the center pin was not connected to anything, you would get a consistent 0v reading, just like we saw. Remember, you also get a consistent 0v reading with the probe leads sitting on the bench not touching anything.

It's almost always center pin positive. But you can test the jack. If the barrel sleeve of the jack has continuity to the case, then that's ground.

Great vid Joshua! I know this is 2 years old, but what would you recommend the best way to check voltage, from a 12 v/2amp bec (Diatone Mini 2A BEC V2.0 12V/2A) to your dji hd fpv air unit (7.4-17.6v), to confirm it's only outputting 17.6v or less, using a 6s lipo? Would you do that from the out on the Diatone BEC? Or from the dji air unit cable connector?
@JoshuaBardwell

I would use a multimeter to test the output pad of the BEC, or the wire, if the output pad was not available.
