My dad was a Vietnam veteran, and these were the only can openers he'd use. I guess once he got used to using them in the army, he never saw a need to get a different type of can opener. Unfortunately, dad's gone now, he got cancer from the Agent Orange used in the war, and he lost his battle with the disease in April of 2020, but I'll never forget him, or his stories. I miss him greatly, and I'm proud to be his son.

Was in the US Forest Service as a wildland firefighter in the late 70's and 80's, and we had a bunch of crates of old Vietnam-era C-Rations to use for emergency field rations on fires. Each ration box contained a P38 can opener in it. Got to use the P38 plenty of times, enough to where i could flick open a can of fruit cocktail or pork 'n beans as fast as you could use a kitchen can opener. As they say, it's all in the wrist action ;-) Eventually we got MRE's, so no more metal cans to open. Still have an old C-Ration P38 on my keyring, though. Historical and sentimental value. We heard the old tale that they were originally made from aluminum out of scrapped P-38 fighter planes from WW2, hence the name. No idea if that's true or not.

To those complaining about it taking too long or he is rambling, while it is about showing how to use a P38, it was meant to show his taking his time to teach his son patiently all the way through to the end. Many others appreciated it and were happy to see it. 😊

So grateful for your demonstration. I bought a sack full of the P38 at a thrift store. I intend to add them to prepper gift bags for family and friends this year. Unfortunately, I have no experience with them. Now I can practice with some confidence that I am actually using the opener right, and pass that info on with it. Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge.

Best how to video I think I've ever seen. By videoing you teaching a child, then allowing him to do it himself truly teaches one who has never used this type of can opener. This video also reminds me of how I learned from my dad. Thanks for the lesson and the memories.

Well, you can look at this as a bit of nostalgia for us older vets. Back before MRE's, a soldier's C Rat meals came in cans. It wasn't prudent to carry can openers around in the field so these nifty little things were the best answer.

Make sure it’s a U.S. opener made by either Speaker or Shelby. There are cheap knock offs of these that simply are not as good. Get one by Shelby or Speaker, and you have a good one. There are similar openers made in Australia and Sweden that are also very good and great to have. But watch out for cheap copies from China.
