I like the Portland gold maple violin shoulder rest. Not too expensive and does the job!

Well thanks for the comment and I couldn't agree more! Actually, the rest that I use in the video is a Portland gold shoulder rest and a lot of my professional friends use it as well. Thanks for the comment!

Hello Joel. My question is this: how come I'm not able to just leave the shoulder rest on my violin when I store it in the case? How come I have to take it off each time? Thank you.

Generally, a violin case is not large enough to provide the space for your instrument with a shoulder rest on. Usually, the top of the case will come into contact with your violin when you close the lid. However, even if it does not and you're still able to close the lid, you are creating a situation where the distance between the lid of the case and the top of your violin is very small. This increases the chances that your violin could be crushed at some point. Ultimately, you want as much distance between the top of your violin and the lid as possible, to ensure the highest probability that your violin will be safe, if the case is dropped or a weight is put on it.
