Came here from Artefexian's video and you're a goddamn lifesaver!!! Building a torus world and have been dreading making maps for it cause I knew that any map I made wouldn't make sense unless I was willing to spend dozens of hours tweaking and learning how to 3d model and texture. Thank you truly from the bottom of my nerdy little heart!

Hey, Great video. Do you have any idea how you would be able to move a drawn texture around the sphere without distorting it? I'm trying to draw tectonic plates and move them back together to see how they would all fit.

Note that in more recent updates of blender Mix RGB is now Mix Color.

What if you want multiple layers? A layer for tectonic plate boundaries, a layer for mountain ranges, etc.

Create another Image Texture node for your new layer and a new Mix RGB node. Then, you can simply combine the Mix RGB node of the previous two layers and the new Image Texture node with the new Mix RGB node! You can keep going with as many layers as you want. There's probably a better way of doing this, but I'm not aware of it. Hope this helps!

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens to the metrics on this video two years after being posted since @Artifexian did a shout out. ^_^

This is really great! Not as nice as doing it in QGIS, but much easier.

I’ve seen methods for displaying geodata on a globe with qgis, but not for data entry. There’s probably a game for entering kml stuff on GoogleEarth(probably really detailed, ‘cause you can zoom in real close, but not particularly easy), then feeding it into qgis…

I tried installing blender 2.81 and most of my issues regarding commands got solved. Now I have an important question, is there a way to drag a layer or a piece of layer from one side of the 3d sphere to the other?

Are there any other alternatives for painting on a 3d sphere apart from Blender and gplates?

I would love if you could make a guide showing how to place PNGs of continents I've already made onto a globe and then project that.

Sadly this won’t help if you want to export the UV map and use it in, let’s say, GPlates, as the triangles at the top and bottom of the texture/UV map itself messes it up and covers up the lines you’ve drawn. You should instead unwrap it or make it a true equirectangular projection. Is it possible for you to do something like this and do a tutorial on it? Maybe also provide a file? I’ve spent like 10+ hours with no luck. And that’s with ideas, help and advice from others bouncing back and forth.
