I'd love a video on what is the existential purpose of the construct called 'HostedZone'. Practically it seems like a glue between public DNS names and those endpoints that are generated by machine.
@BrainTrustDigital

Exactly, Hosted Zones store all the various records that need to be attached to a domain, just as you described, they like the glue relating domains to IP, NS, Alias, MX, TXT records and so on.

Excellent Video. Thanks for shareing this. BTW, In last step, you didnt see website not because of DNS cache, but because you didnt add www in records name. Once you add www, the S3 suggests a www version(which had bucket policy set, and made public).

I'm sorry that you feel that way and appreciate the feedback. I've covered this topic in a previous tutorial (kzitem.info/news/bejne/xn6JtJNjbZyHn20) so it felt like duplication. I also didn't want to tie to a specific end solution to ensure it was clear you could attach the hosted zone to any amazon service once complete. To give you a bit of context, the thinking behind this was to cover the creation of hosted zones, but leave the intended usage intentionally abstract since I don't know the specific goals of the user watching the video. I assume they need a hosted zone, but I don't necessarily know why. This usage could be attaching to an S3 bucket, an EC2 instance or ELB, API gateway and so on. I connected to an S3 bucket in this case as a means to demonstrate proper functionality. Please check out my tutorial static hosted S3 tutorial if you need help with that connection. If you need help with anything after watching that tutorial please don't hesitate to reach out. My whole goal with this channel is to lower the barrier to entry, if you are stuck I will try to help resolve or clarify. I am new to content creation so I always appreciate the feedback, please let me know if there are other opportunities for improvement in these tutorials.

Awesome video! You're very knowledgeable. I just created a developer portfolio site and hosting is not something that I've learned thus far. I registered a domain with GoDaddy and was able to link it to Route 53 thanks to this tutorial. I had the static site on an S3 bucket and linked it to Route 53, also thanks to your video. I do have an issue though. The site is successfully showing up on my mobile. On my desktop it says that the site took too long to respond. I am unable to load it and cleared my DNS cache. Any suggestions for trouble shooting?
@BrainTrustDigital
3 жыл бұрын
A couple things come to mind with this issue that could potentially cause that problem. Browser cache, you should be able to clear browser cache - the exact steps will differ based on browser. Next DNS cache, which you already mentioned clearing so less likely. Finally, URL - compare the desktop URL to the mobile URL. For example, differing protocols: http vs https could create this issue if you have not added the certificate yet. Are you redirecting in the S3 bucket? An example here would be redirecting from ‘www.example.com’ to ‘example.com’. Is the bucket name identical to the URL? I am sure I am forgetting something so I can think about this more, but those were the first few places I could think to check.

@@BrainTrustDigital Thanks for the fast reply! I think it could be the configuration of my buckets or records. Probably the records. Should I create a separate record for the subdomain? I currently have 4 records for my domain. 2 type A for my domain and subdomain, one NS for my nameservers, and one SOA. The site loads properly on my phone using the domain name and sub domain name. Not on the desktop browser. I'm stumped haha. I really need to dive deeper into this subject and become familiar.

I think I may have skipped a lot of steps. I didn't officially transfer my domain to AWS. I just bought it, so I think there is a 60 day period where you can't, so I have to settle for GoDaddy hosting until that time period passes, then I'll go through the process of transferring. Sorry to ask questions without doing proper research!

@BrainTrustDigital
3 жыл бұрын
When you say hosted in AWS, so you mean host as in hosted zone? Assuming so given the video. If that’s the case all sub domains and anything domain related has to occur in route 53. Assuming hosted zone in AWS, you can now think of GoDaddy as the place to pay for domain renewal and that’s pretty much it. The only other thing in GD will be the nameservers pointing to AWS, but that will not change once set up. Let me know if that clears it up

Hello there, I purchased a domain on GoDaddy but right now I'm confused as to which is better? Should I continue using GoDaddy and just let Route53 manage it or is it better if I just migrate from GoDaddy to Route53? Considering both the pricing and performance.
@BrainTrustDigital
3 жыл бұрын
My personal preference is to migrate my domains from GoDaddy or others to AWS. But honestly GoDaddy is really good in my opinion, good prices, great panels, decent support, so you really can't go wrong. Here are my reasons for my preference to migrate: - AWS has the quickest time to resolution name servers as of the last time I researched the topic - Free perks: free SSLs as long as I don't need to access the cert file, free domain privacy. GoDaddy and others sell each of these to you as an up-charge. - Easier to just have everything in a single platform, no need to go through the process of creating hosted zones - No concerns of accidentally letting something expire or failed credit cards, since host of domain are in the same place - While a domain in GoDaddy or others may cost a few dollars less per year, when you factor in the cost of free SSL and free domain privacy as well as convenience I maintain an AWS Route 53 domain is much cheaper. I hope this helps!

@@BrainTrustDigital thank you so much for your time to answer my question! Yeah I’ve heard pretty much good things about AWS Route 53 but the domain I’m using was initially bought at GoDaddy. So to not waste the money used in buying the domain from GoDaddy I had it pointed to Route 53 (thanks to your tutorial btw), the only thing I’m concerned about using AWS ACM is that I need to use a Load Balancer which costs hourly so it made me think if it’s better and cheaper to buy directly the SSL from where the domain was bought instead. 😅

Is it possible to set subdomains in godaddy to point to aws hosted zone, but naked domain to somewhere else?
@BrainTrustDigital
4 жыл бұрын
What you want is possible, but want to clarify one piece: the hosted zone contains all records including sub domains. 1. Create the hosted zone in amazon. 2. Create your sub domains (CNAME records) point to amazon servers, s3, alb, etc. 3. Point naked domain, the A record, to whatever IP you want. If you want the A record to be a redirect to a different domain instead of IP: you can use s3 buckets for this. To accomplish: use an alias record to point to the bucket, use bucket settings to redirect.

The reason for the error is that NS value you are pasting is incorrect -- check for a trailing period in your values "." if there is one, remove it. This is the most common reason for this error as they are presented in a confusing manner.

I merely connected to S3 in this video's case as proof of concept as I wasn't entirely sure which specific AWS service the user watching would want to connect (EC2, ELB, API gateway, CloudFront, etc).
