Not every bus had pay & go machines. And often the ticket validators were not working. To be safe, always buy a few single tickets when you’re at a machine or tobacco shop. And to validate manually, just write the date and time in the ticket by hand.

Thank you for your comment! It's good to know, I haven't seen a bus without a pay&go on our trip, but I did see broken validators. If you're going to take several trips by bus, I think it may be best to get a pass with unlimited trips (like the weekly one), as they only have to be validated once, and you get a better price for the entire stay. 😊

Hi! Yes. So, when you validate it the first time, your pass becomes active. You don't need to validate on each trip - but to enter the metro, you will need to scan it, to open the turnstiles. On the bus, it's not necessary to scan it every time, once it's activated, you're good. I hope I explained this well. :) Enjoy Rome!

@goneonvacation
27 күн бұрын
Actually, most tourists are not using public transportation, so you are more likely to get your wallet stolen in Piazza Navona, than at the metro. Still, if you watch your belongings, you should be safe everywhere in Rome. Keep your hand on your purse in crowded areas, don't have your phone on the table or in a side pocket, and be aware of your surroundings. Don't carry a lot of cash, and leave your passports in the hotel safe. And if someone randomly initiates a conversation with you, ignore them and walk away. If you are just a little careful, you will be ok. 😊 Enjoy your vacation!
@jewelmarkess

@@goneonvacation Many tourists use public transportation. I did, my friend did. We did pretty much what you are suggesting here - all good advice, and avoided being pickpocketed. So far. In general, one should be careful everywhere - metro, bus, Leonardo Express train, train stations as well as everywhere, especially those most visited by tourists. In terms of not carrying cash or passport - this works most of the time, but you cannot avoid when you travel to/from the airport. It's important to be extra careful then and not have too many suitcases. Not more than you can easily keep track of.

I don’t understand the validation thing . When you scan your card to go through is that when it’s validated ? And if you tap and go what is the proof you show ? Also does the 48 and 72 hour pass work on the trams ?
@goneonvacation

Hi! 😊 When you scan your card to go through at the metro, yes, that's when it's validated. You don't need to show any proof at the metro. Without payment/valid pass, the doors simply don't open and you can't go through. The 48 and 72 hours work on trams, too. On buses and trams, these passes only have to be validated once, on your first ride (Nothing bad happens if you validate them every time, though). If you use the tap&go and inspectors come, they will ask for the number of the card you used for payment. 😊 Enjoy your trip! If you have any more questions, I'm happy to help!

Is there a high risk of pickpocketing during the tourist season in Rome's public transport? How safe and crowded are the metro lines outside of the tourist season? Are the buses and trams safer than the metro? How reliable are the tram lines?
@goneonvacation
2 ай бұрын
Hi! As long as you're careful and aware regarding your belongings, you're safe everywhere. 😁 Some tips: keep a hand on your purse, don't leave your backpack unattended, as you would in any other crowded city. Avoid talking to flower/bracelet guys, as they can get annoying, even aggressive. The metro is safe, and so are buses and trams, but a lot more crowded. Buses are the least reliable, but it depends on the area. In the center, buses come every few minutes, so you won't have to wait a lot. However, outside the city center, you can't count on them. The least crowded and most reliable is the metro, because trains come every few minutes. 😊
