I think Strava should just go to an advertising model to make money. Kinda like facebook and the rest of the social media outlets out there. Lower the premium subscription price by a buck or 2 (since the adds will bring in some revenue to make up the difference) and remove the adds for those premium members. I hate to say it, but the direction strava is taking right now is not gonna make any difference in increasing the paid membership subscribers in any significant way.
@TheAtl0001

They should stop with free and only do subscription based but for just $20 a year which everybody can afford and is fair. With this there is more revenue for more and better features.

A good look at the changes there Tim. I subscribed and paid for it about three months back basically to be able to download GPX files from it. £47 a year isn't too bad a cost in my opinion. Other than that I generally use it to track my rides and segments.

The only thing that I'm mad about is that I can't see the leaderboard on small local things. Like where I ride. Come on the leaderboards here are like 15 people at most and it's fun to see my seven local segments in the middle of nowhere which I'm one of the only people who ride regularly here.

100% agree - you want training and leader boards and mapping - it shouldn't be free. I barely use it more than I use Garmin Connect - its my own personal record keeping above all else. tbh - if they said it was £4.00 for EVERYONE, I'd pay for that. I think simplifying the subscription models and taking some free features away is a very sensible move to make the product sustainable.

I always try to eek out as much as I can from free sub on these kind of things, but inevitably the masses do the same and they need to turn a profit to continue to provide the service. Absolutely 100% they should do this - but the basic tracking of rides is fine with me.

Yup - looks like it - only top 10 leader boards are FREE. This is what the Subscription option now lists as included in the Paid version. Compete on Segments - Keep track of your progress and see how you stack up against your friends on your favorite portions of roads or trails. Yeah pretty much changes nothing for me, I use it to track my miles accumulated and usually am only riding against myself anyway. I am on the top 10 of a few om my local leaderboards. I do understand the reasoning behind it($$$).. HOWEVER, I will say it diminishes the accuracy of the local leader boards out side the top 10 ..Even for those paying for the data... So for riders out of the top 10 in their area it wont accurately reflect your local rankings..Pay or not, because every free rider outside the top 10 is now an ignored variable in the equation so to speak.. Further skewing data on these segments. Previously the only unaccounted for segment data was due to riders not on strava at all.. so basically if you are riding outside the top 10 your position in the rankings is a blatant farce, because it will only reflect paying riders..
@TimFromWales
4 жыл бұрын
Free riders outside the top 10 are not ignored variables - the segment leaderboard still exists and your name will be there if you pay or not. You just wont be able to see it if you don't pay. Does that help make sense?
