Pianist and Associate professor Mariam Kharatyan shows how she uses the Sostenuto pedal of a grand piano in her playing.
As a pianist and researcher, Kharatyan has worked on an artistic doctoral project called "Armenian Fingerprints", where she interprets music by Armenian composers Komitas, Alan Hovaness and Aram Khachaturian.
Mariam Kharatyan: "I use the sostenuto pedal in combination with sustain pedal which allows me to create and merge different musical layers of the composition without losing their individual character, and achieve the transparency in my sound, the timbre I search for, the expression and embody the meaning of the composition. In addition, the sostenuto gives me more clarity and variety in articulation while combining the sostenuto and sustain pedals."
The middle pedal (Sostenuto) is the least known among the three pedals of a grand piano, and many people wonder how it can be used when playing. This pedal enables the pianist to "capture" certain notes and let them ring, while being free to combine these sounds with notes that are dry or controlled by the other pedals.
