The use of a USB hub with power (such as the one used in the video) makes the use of an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera possible. At this writing shopping for a Lightening to USB 3 Camera is easier to find than the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter (such as the one used in the video). The lightning connection is being phased out. I updated my iPad Air 2 early in 2020, which turned shopping for cables into hunting for cables. But this video gave me enough information to know exactly what my options were for getting this to work. I found the Lightning connections and the thumb drives and have successfully moved my photos from my iPad. My thanks to you Pete.

I have an iExpand. With a slider switch on the top, you can have either a usb or slide it back and have lightening connector. In the side there is a slot for a micro SD card which you can put into a regular size SD card holder. It works a treat and I use mine to transfer photos to my laptop and to my iPad via the iExpand. Just look for time 2 iExpand on Amazon or whatever. It doesn’t need any additional adapter to work either. There are others, but the Time2 iExpand size is dependent on your choice of micro SD card.

Hi Pete! I have an iPad Pro 12,9 second gen and have the exact same adapter as you. I am at the latest iPad OS software and have plenty of storage. I cleared the memory (with a memory app), I cleared all notifications and safari history. I restarted the iPad and followed your instructions step by step. When I connect the lighting power to the adapter, the charge goes intermittent as if you plug and unplug the power. Also that notification goes on and off just as the charge. On my iPhone X, it doesn’t even register that it’s plugged in to charge, so I used the wireless charger and nothing happens. The thumb drive does not appear in the folder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Same happened to me, it is because your charger is not working properly, and it is not giving off enough power to the adapter for it to work, sometimes a usb drive will show up, but when trying to save files on it, those will be shown as corrupted once you try to visualize them on other devices, also you need to format the usb drive you want to use as EXFAT it is the only format that allows you to write on the drive from the iPad, if you use other formats you can view files and copy from the drive to the iPad, but not create, copy or write anything into the drive

@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for the prompt reply Pete ! I too went to the Apple Store and nobody could really give me a proper answer. They kept suggesting using the iCloud or iTunes as a place from where you could download files. But the problem is that most of our users have just the 5Gb limit for their iCloud storage that comes with an AppleID and they all want their pictures and videos out when they either leave the organisation or trade up to a newer phone. Complicating things is teh fact that in our PC centric network with over 3000 PCs, iTunes is not a software that you are allowed to install. I triied 3rd party software like iMazing but that was often hit and miss. We had a few Macs lying around in the IT support team ans we had iMazing installed on a few of them. But then again, as I said, it was not that straightforward. Although we managed to get file transfers done, it was often a time consuming process. Yes iOS 13.x is a godsend in that regard. But the existence of the Lightning to USB connector that could be powered separately was not something I was aware of before seeing your video. So, thanks again Monsieur ! And should you be in Strasbourg, a bottle of French wine will be on me !
@PeteJohnsMusic
4 жыл бұрын
Wonderful! I do like French wine. 🍷 You may also want to take a look at AudioShare as it has a great WiFi Drive function. Excellent for transferring larger files and all you need is to have your iOS device and PC connected to the same WiFi network and then you can access files using any web browser. May not align with security requirements in an organisation but great on a home network. m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/laV_y555kZpih4Y

The reason it's drawing too much power is simple, any USB 3.0 drive will draw much more power than USB 2.0. That's why you need that external power supply.

Thanks. The only thing I'm not sure of is this: why not just dispense with the whole usb hub/camera-converter/cables thing and do it all via wifi - that is, use a Ravpower device. This (Ravpower) is not exactly new technology - I bought mine a year ago for about $60, and that's probably not that far off the cost of the camera connector you use.
@PeteJohnsMusic
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I must admit I use the WiFi drive feature of AudioShare more than anything these days, as I’m usually transferring between my PC and iPhone. I have heard good things about the Ravpower devices too, but they are hard to get in Australia - for now at least.
