SOLIDWORKS PDM utilizes workflows to keep massive amounts of data organized and protected in your vault as changes are applied. Workflows help enforce company procedures, protect data from changes when they are not allowed, and control permissions throughout the design cycle. Workflows are configured to match your internal processes and procedures, helping to enforce and automate the process by making it as easy and helpful as possible. Workflows are made up of States and Transitions. All files start in an initial state, and then can be transitioned through any available transitions for which the user has permissions. Files must be checked in to change state.
A typical workflow is a change management workflow that creates revisions and tracks changes for files such as SOLIDWORKS drawings. Initially the permissions on the file allow the design team to create, check out, and modify the drawing until it is ready for review. Once the file is transitioned to "Waiting on Approval" it is locked from editing and the responsible reviewer can be notified that the file has transitioned to that state. Searching for files by state creates a live snapshot of all documents that are waiting on specific actions. The file can be rejected or approved by authorized users, and if approved it can be stamped with a formal revision and even have initials and date values populated into the drawing itself, saving the manual process of updating the title block.
Your workflow will be generated for you during the implementation based on a discussion with your team, and can be as simple or complex as needed to accommodate your established processes.
One of the biggest challenges after a SOLIDWORKS PDM adoption is utilizing all the tools that the software has to offer. This video series revisits the biggest topics from the end-user training course so users can confidently perform the daily operations necessary to be organized and productive in the vault.
