Regarding oil based varnish, if oak veneer doors like most are, the oil varnish can delaminate ,some door manufacturers don't recommend oil based varnish. Bizarrely water based is fine. Check doors instructions or check online data sheets as some do not recommend wood oil also. Top and bottom edges really should be sealed also. Even a rag with varnish rub on the bottom as when people wash the floors, the moisture will seep up and swell ruin the door.

I would varnish with one coat before they are installed in case during installation process they get greasy marks on. This stops absorption of grease etc into wood. Maybe sheets of paper between the door and floor tiles?

No sanding or cleaning? If your posting these you should show the full process, wire wool, hoover and methylated spirits wipe down before applying the varnish/oil/stain..but description of the brush work was good.

Hi, when you put on the second coat of clear varnish, do you need to sandpaper the door? Thank you.. Do you also have any recommendations to paint an exterior front (soft wood/ in pine) door? Thank you.

How many coats of varnish do I need to apply? I have the exact same doors, never been painted /varnished before, just the real wood. Do I need to sand it before? In place it has some finger marks from the builders, what can I use to remove those or will they just be covered up with the clear varnish? Can I use white spirit to clean them first or not? Thank you.

Georgia N Hi. I used painters wipes as the done the trick without leaving stains. Another cleaner is meths as I think spirits leave grease marks.

Daniel Nugent thanks for the reply. Do I need to apply several coats? I want to keep the colour as light and natural as possible. Do I sand in between coats? Thanks a lot!!

Hi. I use the wonder wipes like the painters wipes that clean your hands. Or Virasol is a good degreaser which you can get from MyPaintbrush online. Meths is another product you can use aswell. Cheers Dan

Hi Dan great video. A couple of questions, is it ok to put oil based on veneered doors I've heard mixed reports. Also if you had 12 of these to do and 2 with 6 glass panels to half the drop off the door how much would you be charging roughly? Thanks 👍

Hi I would say yes to oil based. Another thing you can use is PV67 which is a 2 pack quick drying lacquer which is used on Bartops or floors. It's by Sadolin. I would give yourself 4 days as it may need a second coat.

@@danielnugent2168 cheers. Someone mentioned Ruskin's floor varnish(water based) but that's 20 minute drying time. You've got to get that on quick before it starts overlapping. Have you tried a short haired roller before?

Hi. you can use E.S.P by Owatrol. If you google it and put that on then you can paint what you want over it. B.I.N primer is also good made by Zinsser and also Supergrip primer by Dulux which is waterbased. All are good. once applied you can use a topcoat of your choice. Regards Daniel
