This is so hard core you simply have to I love it: "Easy maintainance! Just varnish it 2 - 3 times, per year ..." :D

It could be mentioned to treat the varnish well and stir gently as to not beat air into it that can bubble on the surface. JIM

Have you thought of wet sanding between coats vs dry sanding ? I used to dry sand all the time on my 1939 40' mahogany boat,,,13 coats, until I tried wet sanding,,,I too use Epiphanes clear,, by wet sanding, you take less product off and have better control of sanding, less mess, and a much smoother clearer finish...and less coats...

So I understood well and you don't sand between every coat? Just between the first, the second and before the final?
@jsebastiengelinas

you must sand between each coats. if you want a smooth finish in the end. i am not used to boats but in the cabinet industry that is how it's done. i'll do it on my freighter next summer.

Yes. After every coat. That cleans up the finish and scratches so the new coat will stick.

There has to be an easier way. I don't even need that shiny gloss varnish finish, just protected. What gives the same protection other than paint that is easier and or longer lasting? Something sprayed on?

I like to use silicone carbide sand paper, the white sheets. It works well on varnish as it does not clog. Don't worry there is no silicone in it to be detrimental to the finishing. JIM

What is the size of the little tender and would you ever considering building one?

personally the way i learned it is this: for the first coat of varnish is always better to cut it (oil base or water base) with his solvant (1:5 or 1:4 depending..) in that matter varnish gets thinner and penetrates better the naked wood grain and pores.

+Audrey Brulotte ...and that does the same thing as the sealer coats: makes the sanded wood fuzz rigid so the first sanding will break the fuzz off. You can tell Kenneth is beyond expert level just by the fact that there isn't a drop of varnish on his clothes.

Depends on the person and how much pride they have in their work. Also, OCD plays into many fine woodworker's minds. There is a point at which to stop, but that point will vary from craftsperson to craftsperson.

Yes, there are thousands of boat plans available and many are free. Start small. I'm starting with a wooden kayak. How? do and learn.
