Good tip on the VNAV I use the same set up in my King Airs, but set it to 5.0NM and 1500 above WPT with a 1200 FPM DESC. Set it once and it will remember it for every flight as long as you have the VSR on your default NAV 1 page. It works the same in the 650/750 series. A better tip on "back-of-the-napkin" descent planning; Groundspeed/60 = X Altitude to lose/Desired Descent rate = Y X times Y give your distance from your destination to begin your descent. I've used that in everything from a 172 to a Citation X. It works in every aircraft and is essentially what your GPS is doing (albeit in real time). Forget every rule you know about descent planning, just use that one.
@Bartonovich52
6 жыл бұрын
That sounds very complicated compared to taking three decimal places off your altitude and multiplying it by three which you can do in your head. Eg 25,000 feet/1000 = 25 * 3 = 75NM.
@Bartonovich52
6 жыл бұрын
Then descent rate for a 3 degree slope is simply half your groundspeed * 10. 120 knots = 600 fpm.

Like the explanation of why learning your GPS and its use inside out are ultimately related to how useful the GPS is for you. ( making the best with what you have)

The free Garmin desktop simulator and the Reality XP GNS 430W for FSX (purchase) sure are great tools to practice with. For me too, it made they difference between having the 430W be a significant resource in the cockpit instead of a distracting annoyance.

Good to see you back again, Nick! VNAV is something that I personally find to be almost as useful as the navigation function of the 430 itself. I know everyone says that "doing it old school is cool" but really it's not. That's fine for pleasure VFR flying, but IFR is about precision. Descending exactly when you should to reach a crossing restriction when you should is a perfect example. Also, neat to see that you use an old style X52 for your sim. I originally spent my own money on one when I was around 12 years old and I still sometimes use it today. It's actually where the last bit of my name is from, I made this profile name when I was like 13 haha! Do let me know if you ever find yourself down here in the south by the way. I'd love to talk over a beer about flying and the nuances of instructing. I should be working for the airlines in about a year too, so I can deadhead up there to NE to meet up!

Glad you have found it useful too. Haha same with the X52 hear! People complain about me not spending more money on a setup, but... I did... I got an airplane :P Don't need to spend more money on sims anymore.

I always keep mine simple and just do that math. Cruise: 120 kts Altitude: 4,000 MSL TPA: 1000 MSL Target VSI: 500 fpm So with this exercise I want to lose an easy 500 feet per minute (I know this going in) and I have 3,000 feet to lose (6 minutes to target altitude). I'm cruising at 120 kts. so I know I'm covering 2 nm a minute. My TOD (or T/D for some of ya'll) is either 6 minutes or 12 nm out. I always work this out during flight planning. The PA 28-181 that I flew didn't have GPS, but I did use the DME religiously. I imagine that utilizing VNAV would probably make it easier, and I'd probably prefer to have had that onboard, lol, but you gotta make do with what you got! LOL Great video, brother!

Three times the altitude to lose is also based on ground speed. Half your ground speed and add a zero for the vert speed to do the 3/1 descent in.

Great video and very informative. Im going to use this a lot. I have a story relating to this topic (laugh at me all you like); I was flying a c172 with four friends doing a long distance flight. I was flying from north England to south coast England ferrying family and friends. I was at 5,000ft and was nearing my destination. I started a gentle descent since the plane was quite heavy and would pick up speed. I start loosing altitude, but the airport approached much faster. I ended up above the airport at 2,000ft. Quite embarrassing. Passengers didn't know, but the tower asked why I was so high, so, I admitted I f*cked up my descent. They started laughing, and then about ten other pilots started laughing. (The airport is a hub for small props like dash-8s etc etc). I was only a newbie with very few hours. It was probably the worst experience flying for me.
@totherarf

They were probably laughing because 1. They did the same and 2. Pilots are Gods and do not usually admit to errors (on air)!
