Hi. I just finished watching your video. I am in severe pain on the outer thigh of my right leg. I had an mri of my spine and hip 6 months ago showing BULGING DISKS WITH FOCAL PROTRUSIONS AND STENOSIS. Since then I had 6 weeks of PT and while it helped a little it didn’t end the pain even continuing the exercises. But in the last month the pain has increased substantially so that I can no longer put weight on my leg. I had been using my mom’s old rollater but then bought a four pronged cane which is easier to take in the car. But nothing seems to help. The pain is intense as soon as I put pressure on it. Will using a cane or rollator eventually help lessen the pain? Or what should I do? Thanks for any advice.

What do you do if both knees are bad?

@Physical Therapy 101 - None of the YT vids I've watched on this topic so far will explain the reason for using the cane on the opposite side from the bad leg. Why is that? You don't know how to take the info you learned from your training about it & break it down to a simple way of explaining to someone w/o your training? I have a knee that buckles on me due to being bone-on-bone from osteoarthritis. If it buckles on me when the cane is moving with it, that means my good leg is behind me and can't help should the bad leg buckle. If the leg goes on me, then I will fall toward the direction where the leg buckled, right? The cane won't help to keep me up.

In my very none professional opinion, I think maybe a walker would be better for you? You could hold yourself up and severely reduce fall risk by using one.

Physical therapist here. First of all, you're being harsh on this channel as this wasn't an explanation video, but a demonstration of proper usage. They weren't attempting and failing to explain it in the video; they were just saying what you should do. If you have questions like this, you should always go to your medical professional (assuming you're seeing one). Despite that, I understand you're frustrated so let me help clear things up. The reason that you want the cane on the opposite leg is to evenly distribute weight while also taking off pressure from that side (your "bad knee"). Your example doesn't really make sense, as whichever side the cane is on, it will be moving with the cane. If you moved your "good knee" forward with the cane, then there would be a short period of time where you're balancing on your "bad knee" (this is the stance phase of gait). Whatever the case is, the other commenter is correct in that you might need a more supportive assistive device. I would either talk with your primary care physician or your physical therapist about practicing with a higher level assistive device like a four-wheel walker. You could even buy one yourself and see if that works better, but I bet it will due to your knee buckling during weight-bearing.

I was wondering the same thing . My knees have no cartilage but just the left gives problems. Have you had sinvisk ( I may have spelled this wrong) shots in the knee ? It helped me a LOT and usually lasts a loooong time . I also have a compression fracture in my lower back that affects the right leg , terrible shooting pan all the way down to foot . It seems like I would use the quad cane on that side . My husband just got the cane for me so maybe I just need to get used to it.. I would rather have a rollater.though as they have seat where I can sit …

@@suelovescats you should talk to your doctor about it! Maybe see if they can write you an order for a rollator? I don’t use my cane like they do in this video because I find it more beneficial on my worse side.
