Hanging wallpaper on a curved wall presents a unique set of challenges that can make the task intricate and laborious. First, ensuring a perfect fit can be tough. Unlike a flat wall, a curved surface doesn't allow for the straightforward application of wallpaper. It requires careful measuring, cutting, and fitting to ensure an accurate and visually pleasing fit.
In addition, aligning the pattern of the wallpaper can be tricky, especially when dealing with complex or large-scale designs. While hanging wallcovering, it’s all too easy for a pattern to become distorted or misaligned along the curve, which can result in an unappealing look.
Luckily, wallpapering around a curved corner is far from an impossible task. With a little know-how, it’s possible to perform this task all by yourself, without the need for professional assistance.
To help you achieve your installation goals, the ROMAN Products team has put together a brief instructional video on how to wallpaper a curved wall. The video illustrates the proper technique for installing wallcovering around a circular stained-glass window. The procedure goes as follows:
- Begin attaching the wallpaper to the top of the wall, making sure to match the patterns.
Do not smooth the wallpaper down over the curved feature on the wall. Instead, use a pair of scissors to cut off the excess wallpaper covering the window. Cut away just enough to leave wallpaper covering the moulding of the window.
- Using the scissors again, make a series of relief cuts every 1.5 to 2 inches all along the portion of the wallpaper that is covering the window moulding. This will create a series of small strips that protrude from the wall around the moulding. Be sure that the cuts are not deep enough to reach into the portion of the material that will eventually be attached to the wall.
- With your smoothing tool, begin gently pressing the wallpaper onto the surface, starting from the top of the wall.
- When you reach the area of the wallpaper where the relief cuts are present, use the edge of the smoothing tool to press the base of the strips against the wall around the moulding. You will be cutting along this curve.
- Grab a trim tool and a sharp blade. Use the trim tool to press the base of each strip against the wall as you use the blade to cut off the strip. Start at the top of the window and work your way down around the curvature. (Be sure to use a very sharp blade, and change it when needed. A dull blade can rip your wallpaper.)
- When you’re done, the gap in the wallpaper will form a neat semicircle around one side of the window, with the edge of the wallcovering right against the curved moulding. You can now do the other side by using the same process.
When done properly, this procedure results in a wallcovering installation that seems to flow around your curved window seamlessly.
