Hi Kevin, a word of caution... the sealant product doesn’t work well on maps which are printed off on a personal printer. The solvent will cause the ink to distort. This is particularly true for maps printed on ink jet printers.

Thanks Joseph, I have used this many times on laser printed maps but have never tried it on ink jet printers.

If you use a rattle can VERY lightly for the first and second coat it wont run the ink. It has to be just a light dusting or it will run. It is not perfectly waterproof but 4 or 5 coats will render it with a good water replant.

Kevin - if I could suggest...cut all the extraneous map datum etc off the side and the scale off the bottom. Tape these on the back and then waterproof. It will make them smaller and more compact. Highlighting key features (like Lat/Long & MGRS numbers, place names etc) is also a good trick.

Great video as always! I had been looking for maps recently and the local outfitter where I bought maps before stopped carrying them. I found at just one of the local professional printing businesses that they offer large format (22”x27” or up to 24”x28”) waterproof architectural paper for $5 per map. I’ll be picking these up tomorrow. This printer has done several other projects for me, and I’ve always been pleased with the quality of their work. I my use your method on the previous maps I have that are untreated. Thank you!

Very cool Alan! I have bought 8.5x11" waterproof paper and have printed small maps before but I didn't realize how technology has advanced in that area. And so cheap! $5 is nothing for a map, I usually pay $16 for a Canadian 1:50,000 topo map, and that is before waterproofing.
@AlanKidd4life

WOW! I picked up the maps today and they look fantastic! They told me that the paper is also tear resistant. So waterproof, tear-resistant architectural paper. $5 per map. Very pleased! Sure beats the $15-$18 per map I was paying before for just a map on plane paper. I downloaded the PDF of the map from USGS.gov and sent the files to the printer. Two other printers didn’t carry that type of paper. So if you go that route, you may have to check around a bit.

Good question. I don't know if there is both 'good and free' software available. When I started doing this I was using the free Windows Movie Maker. I pushed it to its limit then I bought Adobe Premier Elements 15 a few years ago. Older versions of software like this are still fairly cheap ~$100. Good luck!

@KevinOutdoors
3 жыл бұрын
This might work. I would experiment with the same paper, if you can find it, and apply multiple coats. I have also started using a simple water sealer for multi-materials (concrete, wood etc.). Thompson's Water Seal is one brand that seems to work just as well as this more expensive Map Sea.

Sorry I am not entirely sure how to answer your question, I don't know what a Map marker is. Losing writing in the rain? Without the treatment you could not write on these maps if they were in the rain, they would simply fall apart if they got wet.
