There are several options when it comes to waterproofing shower walls for a tiled shower stall. The old method was to use tar paper or roofing felt behind the cement board or Durock. Newer methods include topical waterproofing like Schluter Kerdi or Redgard. Schluter Kerdi can be difficult to install because it is done with mortar and sometimes bubbles or creases form in the membrane that make it difficult to lay flat. An easier way to do it would be to use a liquid applied membrane such as Redgard, AquaDefense, or Laticrete Hydro Ban.
In this video I explain how to install Laticrete Hydro Ban and why I prefer it over the other liquid applied waterproof membranes.
