To anyone saying that sheetrock is not adequate for a shower . For one its water resistant board he was using then applying redgaurd in 3 coats its completely waterproofed . So what exactly is the difference in a waterproof board you buy. Once you have a complete 100% waterproof rubber membrane over your surface, and the motor tile then grout and sealer is applied correctly. There will never be a issue of there being sheetrock the only way the tile will fail is, failure to maintain it and seal it correctly which most people dont . So this man is a professional and obviously has a good reputation and knows this is a good application probably because hes done more than most of the people on here commenting on it being wrong or a fail . I dont think you would be the guy getting calls to come fix the tile job we just had done because you do it wrong . Just saying .

Red quard great product . I actually did my own test 2 coats on a sneaker cardboard box. Filled up with water left it on my kitchen counter top for days never went through cardboard. That convinced me that it works. As far As me yes all my bathroom s I do use wonderboard or backerboard. But that was the way old timer teach me. As far as green board inside shower if it has red quard on it I don't see a problem. This stuff is great and it water proof . I be done foundations with sealing window leaks with it . I would see why it wouldn't work on drywall when it worked in a cardboard shoe box for days . Great video I enjoy watching . Hey Great video and lot's of information here.. I'm in the middle of a bathroom renovation and was wondering if the following steps I'm about to take are correct? (Tub and drywall is installed and Greenboard is installed down to tub lip). Would the following steps be correct? - Use 100% silicone adhesive in the seams and corners, including the shower niche - Use 100% silicone in gap between the tub and greenboard - Use fiber/mesh tape on all seams and corners including where drywall and tub meets - Use hot mud on all corners and seams and screw holes (but not where tub lip meets green board). - Redgard two full coats on flat surfaces and three in the corners, including 3 coats in corners of the shower niche. **Also I noticed a bow or two on the walls where the drywall dips into the middle/bottom of the wall which may cause the 6x12 tile 'not to clear' the tub lip (Only noticed once the drywall was fastened down tightly).Is there any way to skim those dips with hot mud and still have the Red guard stick to it or would I instead use modified thinset or something similar?** Thanks for your help!

That mesh tape is not a redundancy. Per the Redguard manufacturer's website installation instructions, installer must apply tape at seams and corners and apply a layer of reguard over the seams prior to general application over the whole surface. I forget if one coat is adequate but the recommendations outline in detail that the final dried redguard product needs to be so many mils thick and within a range. Too thin, and potential water barrier failure can occur. Too thick and the mortar may not stick properly to the redguard.

You’re saying in this video at the 14 minute mark that water is not going to see this edge up there or the sides, but in my house it does. My wife showers with the water so hot that when she’s done all the walls in the bathroom outside the shower are literally dripping. That’s also why I’ve had to replace vanity light fixtures that get rusty. Steam is another concern I have when building, just saying.

Thank you for your quick response! I appreciate your videos and respect your opinion, as everything you say seems to make good sense. I am on a concrete slab and was planning on doing my pre-slope and pan all in one shot. I was going to slope from about 2 to 2-1/2” at the furthest wall to about 1-1/2” at the drain, cementing right over the bolted ring, allowing only enough of the edge of the drain to accommodate the tile and thin set. Then paint everything with several coats of redgard, including the outside edge of the drain and filling the basin with water over night to test. I intend to do the Durock seams, as well as the seat seams with fiberglass waterproof tape, lined on both sides with redgard. Do you think I also need to thin set these joints first? Thanks so much for your help.

Custom building products does not approve red gard for use on green board. They only recommend using it on hardi at a 4-1 mix ( 4 parts water- 1 part red gard) as the primer coat. Hardi is thirsty and has to be primed first, and then an additional coat or 2 of red gard. Also apparently green board does not pass code for shower or tub walls anymore, at least not in KY.

I don't know if you still use Greenboard or not for showers, but one thing I thought about if you were to use it again is for seams and corners and screwholes, instead of using all purpose taping mud, use a hot mud like Durabond 90 or Easy Sand. Hot muds are essentially plaster and don't break with water contact, whereas normal taping mud turns to mush again. Plus in general they're stronger and less likely to crack, you can mix them to your own consistency you like like thinset, basically everything about them is better except for convenience. In my own test, green board breaks down outside after 2-3 months, but I've had a Hardie sheet outdoors for over 3 years and it's been fine. So I still think cement boards are better, but strangely in UK "tanking" over drywall is 100% approved and endorsed, as in, applying liquid rubber wateproofing and tape. I still feel the $20-30 or so extra material cost for cement boards for a tub surround is worth it, though.

Thanks for your enthusiasm about RedGard. It is the industry's leading waterproofing and crack isolation membrane. Please note that Custom Building Products recommends that RedGard be installed over a cement backerboard and not drywall or greenboard. Fiberglass mesh tape should be used at changes of plane to help reinforce against movement in walls. I was wondering about that greenboard. While it is moisture proof for painting, I've seen quite a few tile tub surrounds crumble with that medium. Why not just avoid it altogether?
@StarrTile
7 жыл бұрын
Extremely rare to have gypsum crumble, when it does it's due to operator malfunction...no waterproofing, grout too runny or too thin, no grout additive, poor homeowner maintenance, etc...the backer is irrelevant if proper installation is lacking.
@kilts4u2
7 жыл бұрын
While it may be rare for gypsum to crumble, even with waterproofing prep, why use it to start with when concrete backing board and Hardibacker board are available? I read the comments from Custom about not recommended application of RedGard over greenboard. That's my point. I spent 40 years in the remodeling/building business. All in Atlanta--retiring 7 yrs ago. Did a lot of shower pan replacements for insurance repair companies. That's where my experience in observing bad construction comes from. . as I tore out quite a few bad ones. Agreed, waterproofing is essential before installing tile. The industry and its products has come a long way since I started out.
@StarrTile
7 жыл бұрын
Yes I allowed custom building products to post that comment as they are the experts on their product. But Denshield is gypsum with waterproofer on it so using hardi or durock isn't the point, it's the water proofing. So while cbp doesn't think it's a good idea on sheetrock, I've used it for a dozen years without any issues.

I have installed the mortar bed ( although I would have liked to done a little better job sloping/leveling) Is there a product you recommend to tidy up that level and slope? I did the best I could. My next step is walls (right?) doing the proper gap at the bottom. Then after that comes my question. Lots out there about redgard... don't use a premix thinset for the tile (which I love) I hate mixing when I can buy the right consistency ready to use... only the stuff you mix yourself will provide the bond needed for the tile... don't coat the motarbed... coat everything... only coat the seams on the walls .... coat the entire walls... thoughts please....thanks !

I find it odd that you know not to use mastic in a shower (a lot of tile guys don't know that) yet your using green board in a shower. Green board is for bathroom walls but not showers, it's only a moisture protection. I used only durock. Reason being is , even if you're waterproofing the shower,if there is a leak in the pipes In the future then the entire shower would possibly have to be removed and replaced rather than just fixing the pipe and a hole in the drywall from the other side of the wall.
@StarrTile

Yes I suppose anything in life could occur, leaks of pipes inside of the wall would be extremely rare and rectified rather quickly...but assuming it COULD happen in a year or 20 years down the road isn't something I'm thinking about EXCEPT adding in an access panel on the back wall which I do whenever possible.

If I put wonderboard cement board over a stud wall that has a vapor barrier in place is it advisable to use red guard over the wonderboard. Or is it better to avoid red guard. The cement board comes down to the top of the tub flange like you have suggested in other videos.

In the meantime look up denshield, is gypsum board with waterproofer already on it.... you got to start THINKING things out before you start trolling that which you're unaware of 👍👌

They slop it on the tub ..when that dries it's a nightmare...breathing it sucks. So...HERE IS A MIND BLOWER... And I'm the only one that I know that does it. Just to help out the "You're not supposed to use it on drywall, even Redgard says so" story tellers: "Redgard is a liquid waterproofing and crack-prevention material that dries to a flexible membrane. For interior and exterior use, Redgard may be applied to surfaces such as concrete, exterior-grade plywood, decks and gypsum-based materials. It also functions as a moisture barrier beneath all kinds of floor coverings. Redgard comes in 1- and 3.5-gallon sizes and may be applied with a roller, trowel or airless sprayer."

Drywall is a panel made of gypsum plaster sandwiched between thick paper. It is used in the construction of interior walls and ceilings as a replacement for the traditional lath and plaster method. Other names for drywall panels are plasterboard, wallboard, gypsum board, gyprock, and Sheetrock.

Steve Snyder this isn't regular drywall. Its green board drywall. Meaning it is moisture and water resistant. It is approved by building codes in many states. As for the screws, look up USG guidelines for installing drywall. 3 in the field per stud on an 8ft board and I believe its 1 screw per 10" or 12" on edges.
