Lots of comment here about whether this method provides sufficient penetration and strength, and how welds must always be continuous. Wrong. In fact the widely practiced, and accepted, method of joining thin sheet metal for auto body repair is a serious of MIG tack welds. I would welcome a test-to-failure demonstration of the strength of the welds shown here compared to the superior methods claimed in the comments. No doubt a precision TIG weld would win, but I suspect that a lot of us have made continuous welds that we think are hugely stronger, but aren’t. The other issue is product application. We make decisions every day as to the appropriate strength of joined materials. That slender piece of wood trim is attached with a tiny, slender nail that is “weak” but provides the necessary strength and appearance; that wall is framed with 16-penny nails fired by a big nailer. No, I sure as hell wouldn’t use the welding method here for an aircraft engine mount, but for a table stand with welds ground smooth for appearance the rod arc welding shown here would be indestructible. Anyone who welds should know the principles of heat, speed, penetration and strength, especially for crucial applications. But to immediately dismiss what is shown here based on theory without empirical proof is bad science.

@darinclay6838

Those "test-to-failure demonstrations" are done all the time in welding schools, and I'm sure there are plenty on KZitem. They show conclusively that these welds are weaker. What he does here is fine for something that doesn't bear a load. He's contaminating the puddle with flux again and again. He's heating, cooling, heating, cooling...again and again. You can not get away from physics--the weld will be more brittle than a continuous bead, even if he were to magically get the same penetration. MIG doesn't use flux and thin auto body sheet metal is welded for appearance, not strength. I don't think the MIG comparison works. I admit that I am a terrible welder, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
@thardyryll

@@darinclay6838 Those are good points, and it sounds like our welding skills are similar. Every time I make a weld that might actually hold two pieces of steel together for a few hours I stare at it in amazement. @mckyvr The way you say it is what I was taught long ago--the metal is less likely to warp. I'm not a good welder, but I remember the lesson well, "An ugly, strong weld is way better than a pretty, weak weld, but if you practice, you don't have to choose." This method of doing lots of little tack welds is catching on because the welds look nice, but if you're doing anything that requires strength, you'll be disappointed with the results. The guy making the vid has other work where he does structural welds and does them right, but if you are just doing some ornamental work, then this is fine.

Incorrect. Using low feed gives less material thus making it weak. Using faster feed(when using mig) keeps material thick and tack welding while the bead is still hot is just as good as a normal bead line. This is how you weld thin metals, like when doing automotive work.
