This battle in normal is insane. My confederate troops were outnumbered at least 3 to 1 and I was outgunned at least 6 to 1 in guns. Like wtf? Lol

I've found the best strategy here is offense, at least on hard level. I pack my left flank, and my goal is the utter annihilation of the Union I Corps before the next units arrive. This is very achievable and takes place in and around the woods where their I Corps artillery sits. I then hold these woods for a while, damaging II and XII corps units as much as possible with one of my divisions, while the rest fall back and rest. At this time I use the woods and shields/breastworks. Again my goal is the destruction of as many brigades as possible on the flanks to limit their options later. When the second phase starts, there is a minor glitch should you march hard to cover the bridge near Sunken Road. Place 3 infantry there in a semicircle backed by a couple of batteries, and use your cav and one other brigade to cover the areas their cav enter. Generally I annihilate all Union cav in just a few minutes game time, and it's possible to wipe out the V Corp division crossing the bridge. On the left as you fall back, the Union will leave their batteries unprotected when they push forward, and your cav can have a field day mopping them up. Once the final phase starts, try to hold the center bridge again, crushing the first couple of brigades that cross. The Stone Bridge is hard to hold, but again the best defense is a good offense. I rush 2 brigades to support the one in the works, and they take turns charging anyone who makes it across from IX Corps, and rotating into the works. Admittedly, I take high casualties, but I have beaten the scenario on hard with around 45K men.

My respect for the Army of Northern Virginia just went up even farther when I realize what a juggernaut they faced at Sharpsburg, and they only had 2 Corps, Longstreet's and Jackson's. Using a 3rd Corp in the game is not correct.

That's all true! Lee had a very critical ally in the battle, however--George McClellan. Historically, McClellan had 87,000 troops vs. Lee's 40,000, but Mac only committed about 50,000 to the battle and he attacked Lee piecemeal. The AI however, eventually attacks with everything.

That’s not how you play this one...you can’t let them cross the bridge. Bottle them up and make them fight you at the treeline of dunker hill, through the defenses in the cornfield and in the woods on the other side. If they bend your flank on the right then use cav to charge at them. Don’t fight at the sunken road, that may sound counterintuitive but it stretches your lines out too thin. I always use a full division of melee cav grouped together to disintegrate enemy infantry units fast, even if the cav takes casualties. You cannot give you those positions to the right of the cornfield, you have to throw everything you have at that forward defense

I didn't even bother with Nicodemus Hill on the left because it's too open. I put the troops in the woods behind. I took the woods to the right of the fortifications first thing. Just hold that straight line and shift troops to the right with the second corps. They never got close to the Sunken Road. On the right, there's a third bridge to the north that they don't mention where Porter's entire corps came pouring through. That caused me to sweat a bit. Just have an adequately sized third corps with all artillery and infantry to cover the three bridges and be able to shift troops from the second corps. Inflicted 46,000 at the cost of only 13,000 post Fredericksburg patch (which is admittedly easier than before).

I was somehow able to hold the bridge near Sunken Road with only 3-4 brigades and couple of arty batteries. II Corps' general was also there to keep the morale up. Made the battle a lot easier that way imo because I could send the bulk of II Corps to help the hard-pressed I Corps

The AI likes to overconcentrate and ignores the flanks. You can make use of it. When the whole map is revealed and Burnside rushes for the bridge it will focus all the effort on the Sunken road, leaving your left flank (at the Dunker church) almost completely open. When the time is right you can swing it right and encircle the yankees. I didn't record the whole thing, just took a few snapshots. postimg.org/image/qmuf0mkx3/ In the end it looked like this postimg.org/image/6mrkg58zr/ and the final results postimg.org/image/6763nkuw9/

I have not won the battle yet. I was thinking of doing what you did in your screen shots this morning. I noticed that the ai tends to leave the left flank open and push everything at the road. To bad I lose most of my ammo before that point and my troops are easy to run.
@BarrettL1970

I did this... it works...you are flanking right the rest of the battle and the can never really mass attack you once you do this. With that said the battle will still be difficult.
@blootheraven2396

Your left flank is wayyyyyyyy too strong. The strat is defeating the left flank and putting a small garison of skirms on both points while swinging your left flank around on them while they are bust with arty, recapture the forrest, and use the cover to drive em back

The best way to win this battle is not to wrap your battle plans around a cigar and leave it lying in the road for the Union to find with a little orange pop-up that says 'read me'. Just saying.
@daldan66
Жыл бұрын
the best strat for me was putting a brigade in the center and 2 skirms on each side on the bridge to the east of sunken road and for some reason the AI there marched most of their troops across the bridge BEFORE the map expanded to sharpsburg which allowed me to absolutely obliterate them and as it was the edge of the map still they were just stuck routing on the bridge where they all died or shattered completely. i was then able to move the forces there save for one skirm to hold the bridge to then support my defense of the forest, all while i only had 2 brigades and a sniper guarding the left forest, majority of my units i set up in the right forest immediately at battle start so i claim the advantage of the trees and they never broke through me, i also only had 34k troops to their 82k, killed them almost down to the last man

Antietam was rough playing as the Confederacy. I had 46,000 on the field to their 87,000. Managed to inflict 37,000 casualties on him while I took 21,400. I won but took a lot of casualties.

Wow have strategies evolved through the years.. I only got this game a few months ago, so I missed the big learning curve. ;) Just finished Antietam on legendary (CSA campaign), taking only 5,500 infantry losses (+200 cav). Destroyed every enemy unit in return (~85 k). I somewhat wish I got to try when it was still a challenge.

Hmm..What difficulty is this? I played on normal and employed a rather aggressive strategy sucessfully. I set up my corps in a specfic way that I had a numerical advantage in the first phase of the battle and used that to completely destroy their first troops.. All the reinforcement they got later only made the battle numerically even.. In that situation I could just fight them off and hold the important points. Might not work on higher difficulty though..^^

I stay in the woods. Fishhook formation along the western wood line. The first objective on the hill isn't worth holding. I stay in the woods and defend dunker church and sunken road. Place reserves in woods behind main line. It's a purely defensive stance but it works with less casualties

1 of two option I can see, either your playing on easy or your not perusing the enemy and just holding your lines? The trees at the church are good but they won't completely stop a powerful union attack especially as the top right can be hit from multiple directions... Similarly the bridges can't be held for a small loss on the right because the terrain is not overly great for defense have actually found the best defense is sending a powerful force over the river in the north then driving down the right side of the river, completely destroys both bridge forces but will still cost a good 2,000 men. Anyway as Jeffrey says would be interesting to hear how you do it, I wiped out the federals to the last unit in my game I played today still cost me 8,800 infantry and about 20 cannon though.

By the time of this battle I have 3 star units...I put one on the hill and both arty units in the gap by the hill...that elite unit with hill cover is for the Iron Brigade East that will approach from the NW stream crossing (my 3 star unit ,they are armed with the Austrian rifles mated with the faster reload perk). The Iron Brigade (E) will eventually run or vanish. NE is where you put your starting core of the game and for the rest of the battles sweep right...this will eventually break the will of the Northern Army. Important note...I have full reconnaissance so I know what the enemy has as regards to rifles...and if you have won every battle in date order the Union Army infantry only carries Springfield 42s....and yes keep them in the trees.

difficulty: Hard 13,000 less soldiers than you had and the AI was never allowed to cross either bridge. your strategy works on easy but idk on anything else.
