Great Cthulhu got a balance change according to Sandy Peterson the game designer. 1) It no longer costs Power to Emerge after a Submerge. 2) Dreams now costs 2 Power instead of 3.

If playing against Red don't enter a slugfest with them early. Build around the oceans and even avoid combat until others outreach--this seems counter intuitive for an offensive race, but I don't think they are, I think they are just good in a fight to keep people away. Accumulate as many ES tokens and get involved with ritualing as possible early as well. I've heard people poo poo this one, but as the game scatters later on (I play defensively from stronghold position in the oceans). Only go travelling with Cthulu's Submerge either when people are in oceans trying to setup gates or targeting important Great Ones as you get Doom tokens for their respawn, but not to defend your own. Use it late in the game to attack a fortified land position to gain extra gates. Remember he only costs a little to bring back out and get all those damn points!

what do you mean by getting Doom tokens for other people's Great Ones respawn? Maybe its just too early in the morning, but I think I'm misunderstanding that one.

Dreams and Devolve can most easily bully the players not going immediately after you - turn one of their cultists green, then during the turn before theirs, devolve it. They can't act in between.

Hi. Can you help with a question. The Regenerate Post-Battle ability "Assign up to 2 Kill or Pain results to the same Starspawn. If 2 Kills are applied, the Starspawn is killed. On any other combination of Kill or Pain results, the Starspawn is only Pained." Is the Starspawn eliminated if I apply only one Kill (without additional pains - Let's say the enemy only rolled one kill result and I assigned it to the Starspawn)?

im reading on the wiki for dreams that its an action cost of 2. it doesnt say you have to pay to summon one of your cultists

16:40... if you run out of deep ones and cultists in your pool, you dont know how to play with cthulhu. I mean, worst case scenario if no one or you dont use combat with deep ones, spread them and control at least 4 gates = win. If people avoid combat, force them, its how Cthulhu works.

I have won playing Cthulhu by doing many Rituals of A if I have 3 or 4 gates. For a disclaimer, this was against new players (as was I).

What does Cthulhu Fgongan or however you spell it mean?

Not really sure what it means. It’s from the story “The Call of Cthulhu” by HP Lovecraft, cultists seem to chant it in relation to Cthulhu

My first game was with great Cthulu, and I was miserable through a good chunk of it. We played without neutral units/gods, so I think that's a detriment to him. Dreams is awful. Like. How often would an opponent leave a gate unguarded? Even if you DON'T have dreams, windwalker's looking to swoop in and kidnap cultists anyway, isn't he? So...great, you spend 3 points to ah. make the opponent spend 1 to capture? I don't get it. Submerge is cthulu. It's the only thing that ever really felt scary from him, just having an army off the board, ready to pounce.
@GreyWizardInsights

Thanks for joining the conversation Pandaman64! It sounds like you weren't using the errata. In the errata, Dreams is 2 points and Submerge is free to attack with (1 point to submerge), so even more deadly. boardgamegeek.com/filepage/119995/official-balance-changes-formatted-version While Dreams is cheaper, I still think you're right that its one of the best spellbooks to consider dropping for a neutral spellbook, perhaps Undimensioned. Submerge, attack for free anywhere on the board including land, then use Undimensioned for 2 power to pull your army back to an ocean location.

I didn't know that errata was official, I just thought it was something they were considering. That's awesome!

Would it be worth to summon a high priest in the first action phrase?
@GreyWizardInsights
5 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I recommend high priests for the next two faction guides but personally for Cthulhu... 🤔 I don’t think there is much a first turn high priest allows that you can’t normally do. The key is that it moves power from the first turn to the second, so if moving to 1 power fulfills a strategy then yes. What are you considering doing second turn that you need more power?
@MrMaul80

@@GreyWizardInsights mainly wanting power after I summon Cthulhu. 2nd round you have just enough power to summon him but nothing until the 3rd round

@@MrMaul80 I think you have to watch the other players and mirror them in general, but using the HP to have an extra energy after summoning Cthulhu can be great, but what I don't think you want, is to have a situation, where that extra power doesn't do anything for you. Submerge might be a good use for the extra power, to intimidate on the third turn. What do you think you'd do with that extra bit of power?

Why aren't we supposed to play witches in tera mystica?
@GreyWizardInsights
5 жыл бұрын
This is from a long time ago, but statistically, it takes a very strong player to play Witches competitively, otherwise witches lose more often than most other factions. Thats just from a raw analysis of internet games, if you're a good player, you can do well with most factions and might even have an advantage with witches.

Great cthulhu is all about getting in other players faces and stopping them building up.
@GreyWizardInsights

I wish I had emphasized in my video that the other factions are often "what do I do this turn" but Great Cthulhu is often more about forcing those players to change their mindset to "What is Great Cthulhu going to do next turn?" He's scary and he forces people to play differently...if he's doing his job.

Can't Great Cthulhu can come back even if another faction owns his gate?
@GreyWizardInsights

Not if Opener of the Way steals his gate and there isn't any gate left in Ryleh. If you haven't played with Opener of the Way, each of their 3+ cost units can literally move gates, Great Cthulhu requires that a gate exist in Ryleh.

I never find Dreams worth using, a smart player is never going to leave their cultists alone to let you just replace it with one of yours, they will always guard it.
@GreyWizardInsights
7 жыл бұрын
I really do think most of the "punish people who think they can hold a gate alone" powers are rarely useful directly because people always defend against it once they experience it one time or see it happen one time. However, if you didn't take Dreams, it might really change how your opponents play the game. I suspect most of these powers are to encourage spreading of limited resources.
@jebeddo08

Even if you dont leave a gate just with 1 cultist its still very usefull. It forces people to make options and in worst case scenario use dreams and then devolve, there next action will have to be how to solve that problem. Its like in chess, when you start reacting to your oponent attacks and stop having your own strategy, you are done
@redeemingreview7818

As you unsubmerge your army and get pained around you can make sure your monsters strategically end up next to enemy gates with only one cultist and weak defenses. At that point you can dream their cultist away and your monster will already be there to defend from capture.
