I was about to give up on getting 2 switches to work on a single light in an old house (a 12-3 wire was already going between the two switches but one switch was dead). I have a book describing just one method and I've searched the internet for other options. No-go. I was about to give up on this preexisting wire job and just live with one dead switch. Then I found this video, stayed with it to watch your second method, and BINGO! I can't thank you enough. Now we can turn a light on when we come in from the garage without tripping in the dark to get to a light switch. Can't thank you enough!

I’m housesitting at a residence of a friend and as long as I’ve known him, his 3-way light has never worked. While housesitting, I couldn’t stand it! One box had a 3-way and the other had a regular switch. I went out, bought 2 new switches and replaced them, wiring them as per the first method in your video. Works like a charm! The reason they do the first method nowadays is because if someone were to change the light switch out with a dimmer later there's a neutral available. Most dimmers afaik require a neutral. Code in my area requires neutrals in all boxes even if they are not connected to anything. Josh is cool.

@@lisacheek7433 It's more of a safety thing than any thing else. They want a switch to each entrance of a room or stairway or hallway, so that you do not have to stumble through a dark room and trip over a chair and break a leg to turn on a light. In really old houses they would have a light hanging from the ceiling, with the switch right on the socket. Not all codes pertain to shocks or fire hazards. Some are just basic personal safety.
