Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful! It also reminds me of a story... I created a remote controlled house light switch for a science fair when I was a kid in the early 1990’s. I used RC car parts that could attach to any light switch. I lost the science fair to a classmate with model rocket engines strapped to a pair of skis. I’m still sour about it. I should have patented my light switch idea, but everyone thought it was stupid and I was only like 10 years old. “Why would anybody want to remotely control a light?!” Lol.... #hugeregrets

exactly. The switch only has to energize a small coil inside the relay (usually a few milliamps). Once the contacts of the relay are made it can pass whatever current the relay is rated for (usually 15 amps for the one in the video). Whats the difference between negative and positive rrigger relay... which do you prefer always
@WiringRescue
3 жыл бұрын
It really depends what the relay is being used for. I’ll give you two examples: 1. Let’s say you want some new fog lights to always come on with your headlights. You would use a power wire from your headlights to trigger the fog light relay (“positive trigger” on pin 86), which would flick your fog lights on whenever the headlights are powered up. 2. Now let’s instead pretend you want a toggle switch inside the cab of your truck to turn the new fog lights on. Using a negative trigger relay, you could keep all the power wires and relay under your hood. Then simply run one negative trigger wire (“negative trigger” from pin 86) inside the cab of your truck, to a switch. The other side of the switch could ground to any metal under your dashboard. By doing this, you won’t need to splice into any wires inside your truck, and there is no risk of the trigger wire rubbing on anything and popping a fuse, because the trigger is on the ground circuit. So in short “it depends”. :) hope that helped a bit.

I love your videos and have enjoyed being a subscriber to your channel. I have also watched your fan wiring video and I have a question for you. I have a ground activated radiator fan through a relay. No thermostat, just a switch. My toggle switch has three terminals and it has a warning light in the toggle that I want to use. I think I have the fan wired properly and everything seems to work as it should. I have my 85 ground wire going to the center terminal on the three terminal switch and I have a ground wire on one of the side terminals. Unfortunately, when I switch the toggle and turn on the fan, the warning light on the toggle does not light and I cannot figure out how to get it to do so. I noticed in this video it appears that you are also using a switch that lights when the unit is switched on, but unless I am mistaken, your switch light is also not working when the fan is on. Can you tell me how we can solve this problem? Thanks so much! Lin

When I'm installing a new component (light bar) on my truck I have the option of Positive or Negative trigger. What is the deciding factor on which option to choose?
@WiringRescue
2 жыл бұрын
Either will work if wired correctly. It mostly depends where you will be mounting the relay. Sometimes people don’t want to have a positive trigger wire running into their vehicle, because it could rub on something and short out. A negative wire will just turn your light on if the wire shorts out. Negative triggers also generally have less wiring because one side of the switch goes right to ground, which could be right next to the switch. Positive trigger needs a full power wire on each side of the switch.

@WiringRescue
2 жыл бұрын
They are both perfectly safe if wired right with appropriate fuses and wire sizes. They each have benefits. It really depends what you’re doing with them. Some people like negative triggers because it allows them to only run a negative wire into the car and ground it right to a dash. Others want a positive trigger because it’s necessary for controlling that type of circuit they have. Like everything in life “it depends”.

Here is how I would do it: - buy a 4 or 5 pin relay (doesn’t matter which) - connect the factory Harley 12v+ headlight wire to pin 86 on the relay. - connect pin 85 to a ground - connect pin 30 to the battery with a fuse in between (fuse size would be based on how many amps the headlight draws) - connect pin 87 as the power feed to your new headlight. Then when you turn on your headlights, your factory Harley wiring will tell your relay to turn on, which will pop on your fancy new light! Good luck! Hope it works out!

@@WorstPaperCut - as long as your steering wheel is grounded that should work. What you’re doing sounds similar to how to wire a horn, which I made a video for too kzitem.info/news/bejne/xqtm3IWBhHaHm6Q

I set up a negative triggered relay on my switch, but my issue is that the on position of the switch is an open circuit and the off position of the switch is a closed circuit. Therefore I am using 87a to power the lights. When the switch is off ( closed circuit) the relay is using power and will draw the battery down. Is there a way to hook this setup without the draw?

The easiest solution would be to use a different switch. However, I’m guessing that you like the switch you have. So - maybe use two relays: 1: set relay #1 up exactly how you have it right now. 2: set up a second relay that turns on with the ignition switch, and powers up pin 30 on relay #1. It’s not great, but it would probably work.

I tried in a bit different way but it doesnt work for me.. can you help me? I negative(ground) to 86 pin and also connected my lamp wire to 86 then, 87 was connected to possitive of my lamp, 30 was connected to possitive battery and possitive switch and 85 was connected to negative switch.. and it doesnt work only the relay was buzzing

It sounds like you have a negative on Pin 85 and 86, which will make the relay not work. If you copy the directions in the video, you should have no trouble. I also have another method here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGiD2GaQoKhidqA

I was wondering culd relays be activated via pick up coil? I have loot different relays so Im surching to eliminate ignition trigger from me pick up coil. I noticed 4 diferent relays. 2pin warning light buzzer relay. 3 pin blinker relay 4pin rear windscrean heater relay 6 pin windscrean viper motor relay . So can I use any of those relays and make them programabel variabel for ignition coils?? At some acesions me car refused to stop when all 4 blinker worked engin worked in union with blinker relay,the second thing hapened me car self excelerated from idel to mac rpm be him self if I turned head lights ON. So I wonderd what the hell was all that about? I do have how ever linear voltage regulator inside me dashboard. Later I found the problem corroded wire was on back side lights didnt get ground andto me ignition key 1 black wire smoked hade bade conection. So any one know why that acured and how actualy control those relays manualy for engine speed? Its similar to buzz coil just in me case its fiering true the ground some how. Any usefull advice wuld be great. I wuld like to have that set up buzz coil with out ignition module for stationary engines generators who spin al very low rpm .

Hello great video! I do have one question. Do all 4 post relays have be used on a negative switch? Or can you use it for either? Positive switch or negative switch? If not, how do you determine which relay you have? neg or pos. switch. Thank you

Hello! 4 post relays can be used with a negative OR a positive switch. You can swap 85 and 86 from positive to negative with no issues. :)

Could that switch be on the other side of the accessory wire on the negative wire
@WiringRescue

Assuming I understand you correctly, that would not work right. If you do that, the relay would serve no purpose. The goal with the relay is to use a small amperage switch to control a larger amperage circuit.

@@WiringRescue so could I just make the negative wire with the switch on it long enough to reach the dash then ground it to the body some where up by the dash where I’ll be putting the switch ? Thanks so much for the reply’s just leaning about relays and it’s a little confusing hahaha
@76ShadowGhost

@@halifaxcanada3655 yes. That is the best reason for using a negative trigger. One side of the switch can go to the relay and the other side can go to body ground. Just think of the switch being a controllable break in a wire.

May I ask why are you using a 5 pin relay for this video that would only require a 4 pin relay? I thought 5 pin relays were intended to alternate between two connections, one of which is always on.
@WiringRescue

Good question. It’s because I happen to own a 5 pin relay at that moment, and not a 4 pin relay. Either one works.
