That's a man who knows what he's doing. I've wired Strats before, but this weekend I spent two days trying to wire all the stuff on a pickguard and it just didn't happen, ran into all sorts of problems, but I guess that's just life, will try again with a fresh head. Very good video, thanks. I need to work on my patience, and also my rational thinking.

For the lefties out there, if you use regular pots you wire them the same way as shown here but once installed the pots will turn the opposite way as a right handed guitar. I am used to it that way. If you want them to turn like a right handed guitar, use a reverse logarithmic pot (sometimes referred to as left handed but basically its reverse log) and swap the outer lug wires on each pot.

I had a question I hope someone could answer, more for curiosity sake. When I did the "screw driver test" from the video if the pickup selector was in a position activating 2 pickups one was significantly quieter than the other. I don't think I would ever notice playing the guitar. Thanks again for the video and to anyone who could shed a little light on this anomaly.

someone may have already added this to the comments. If you use an alligator clip between the space of the pot lug and the wax capacitor the alligator clip absorbs the heat from the soldering iron saving you the trouble of the capacitor from melting or damaging in the process.
@SixStringSupplies
5 жыл бұрын
Hi yes the alligator clip is known as a heat sink which takes the heat before it reaches the cap. It’s a fairly common trick to stop burning the caps and evidently should’ve been used in this case with a wax capacitor!!

With all respect, the solder joints at 9:17, 13:20, 20:54, 22:40 , 30:08 and 33:00 are cold. The one at 30:08 is especially important because this is where electrical ground is fed into the guitar. The solder should flow smoothly onto both surfaces and form a fillet. The abrupt blobbed shapes you have around the base of the solder joints is evidence it did not flow smoothly because both surfaces were not adequately heated for reflow to occur. You should consider using some flux. It would greatly improve the quality of those joints. It makes a difference. Cold joints are susceptible to breakage over time.

If the underside of the pickguard has a conductive shield, do you still need to run earth wire to/from the pots?
@guineapigreynolds4439
Жыл бұрын
when you're selecting your earth lug, can it be either of the outside ones? Likewise, are the input and output lugs after you've selected the earth always the same position? I ask because I want to make sure I choose correctly if I have the pots facing each other (with the 3 lugs pointing at one another) as opposed to facing away from each other so the 3 lugs from the pots are all pointing in the same direction. Sorry if that's a basic question and thanks in advance for any advice.

So I just got a new squire strat and something I noticed about it is that the pickup switch barely works and only when you mess with it a bunch and push it forcefully to the side will it work. I literally had to tie pipe cleaners from the switch to the wammy bar to make enough tension for the switch to be in the right spot to work. Without it, it barely makes any sound at all and sometime none at all. It’s very annoying so I’m just wonder what the actual hell I could do to stop this
@nickdestruct

My strat is super loud now idk wtf happened. I bought three new 250k pots. The pots (fender named package, cts brand) I bought had the brown cap in each bag but I only used one. Originally my guitar (squire strat) had two caps in it I believe. But yea sounds overdriven with every setting. My volume knob seems to be a gain control now. Also seems my tone knobs don’t have an effect. But you pretty much did it the same way Seymour Duncan’s schematic shows. So idk. Could be because I used their included cap and not ones like you did or a .047 uf. Guess I’ll put all the strings on it or rip a huge cap off a board I have and try that to tone it down some.
@SixStringSupplies
4 жыл бұрын
Could be the cap, your pickups could also be too close to the strings so you could try to lower them. If your tone pots don’t work, they’re either not grounded properly, or the cap is dud/cooked. Thanks for watching!

I noticed the back of the pick guard was shielded with copper tape but you didn't include a wire from the back of teh volume pot to the shieling tape in the control cavity.
@SixStringSupplies
4 жыл бұрын
i think this was the first video I did. It is not necessary, as the pots should be coming in contact with the copper, and therefore grounding it. However, the lock washer teeth can eat through the copper tape over time, which is another reason to add the additional ground

Hi there, during the replacement of one string, I found within the rear cavity that the guitar, a 3/4 size, was constructed in plywood so I removed all the components in order to re-use these after making a new solid wood body, in elm. Unfortunately, following the dismantling process I found that one blue wire came detached from somewhere and upon examination, I see that there is one terminal on the 5 position switch, ie. terminal 4, which does not have a wire attached and this terminal is bridged to its neighbour terminal 3. Also, although there is solder on the spring retainer within the rear cavity, none of the remaining wires will reach it so would it be safe to assume that this ground terminal has never been used. Apologies for necessary lengthy enquiry.

Great video, thank you! I've heard that you shouldn't ground the pots so that they all link together, as this creates a 'loop' and unwanted buzzing. Do you think it would be better to ground volume to tone 1, then volume to tone 2??

Richard Spanswick that would get a bit messy I think. Technically, if you're using a grounding plate (or shielding as above, you don't need to connect the pots) we do it as habit

In the case of a hardtail strat with no tremolo where would you solder the main ground to,the jack?
@axelmorisson
3 жыл бұрын
nope.. in that case you have a hole that goes right under the hardtail plate (or string retainer plate if you will) and then the wire just gets squashed in there. You remove insulation at the end and spread the wire under the plate, then screw the plate down to the body- it should make contact and it grounds the endplate and strings.
