I thought it was recommended that a 12v car leisure battery should be in circuit. The reason being that the heater needs to carry out a shutting down cooling cycle to prevent residual heat melting the control panel should the fan stop prematurely with a power cut. The shut down apparently takes several minutes to dissipate the heat in the combustion chamber.
@bobjones1131
3 жыл бұрын
He didn't say that you had to unplug it before it cycles down. A power failure can happen with DC also. A battery backup is always a good idea, but it still won't know to turn off properly before the battery drains also.
@tammyjilly
3 жыл бұрын
@@bobjones1131 You don’t unplug it. I’ve rigged mine with two relays. One n/o and one n/c from a 12 volt leisure battery and a 20 amp power supply unit. Also an adjustable voltage sensitive relay in the diesel pump feed wire. Normal operation is from the psu through a n/o 12v relay. If there’s a power failure this relay opens and the relay on the battery closes allowing the heater to continue working off the battery. If the battery voltage gets too low then the v. s relay opens and shuts the pump down. The unit carries on with the fan going through the shut down cycle using the battery until everything stops.

@@bobjones1131 it’s cheap and easy to do. The two relays controlling the psu and battery were less than £4 each from a motor factors, and the vs adjustable relay less than a fiver from e bay. Then all you need is the wire and a few clips. I used 1mm for the relay coils and 2.5mm for the heater due to the 10 amp pull of the glow plug. I’m not a sparks but it all seems to work ok. I suppose you could add another relay to automatically charge the leisure battery when it had shut down on low voltage. I’m not sure about that.

Electrical suppliers and hobby stores sell adaptable boxes in many sizes with clear lids or not as desired. This is necessary to make it legal as the 240v termination is exposed with little protection on the power supply terminal strip. Just keep in mind that you will have to drill some holes or install a vent fan cover kit on the box to let the fan breathe and dissipate heat. 🔥

Most have a small adjustment screw to fine tune the output voltage ⚡ Put a multimeter on it or use your heater display in the off mode to show voltage and slowly wind it up to about 12.4 volts DC would be my recommendation as a healthy battery will be sitting at above 12v anyway. Also check the amp rating of the power supply 20A would be the minimum I would use but not much more expensive to go 30A

Soldering is against wiring codes. Reason is solder will recrystallise thereby the soldered cable ends will eventually become loose in the terminations and possibly overheat.

@@grahamfrear9270 No, the 5kw heaters draw between 10 and 12 amps at 12v when powering up and powering down. With 30 amps available from the power supply you are barely using even half of the available current. Once running the heater will be using in the region of 2 amps. I don't know where Mr Davies learned to solder... Because that was an awful demonstration. Whether that iron was 'accurate' or not, it would undertake a better 'tinning' if the nib was CLEAN and tinned itself. By rights - even with the csa of a standard domestic 13/16A - 3 conductor cable, the bear copper conductor would wick-up that hot solder far quicker with a hot tinned nib in contact. Rule of thumb being, as minimal time spent heating the conductor as possible to avoid melting the insulation, or causing excessive wicking which draws too much solder into the conductor wires. A dirty or corroded nib does not pass thermal energy as well as a cleanly tinned nib, causing the tendency to hold the nib to the conductor for longer causing the latter issue to occur. CLEAN YOUR FECKIN' NIB FFS!
