Wow three wires on the trunk? I always use just a single wire but maybe I’ll try to use two. Here In Florida everything grows so fast that within 3 weeks it’s already biting into the branch

Yes Sir, if it's needed so in training. It will add more surface area to the wire that would make it more bendable without breaking the branch/trunk. Good job for growing them well.

if the wire’s biting in early, like after 3 weeks, i think you will have to mature that specific tree, maybe in 2 - 6 years young trees grow very fast, but it gets slower as it age,

Good idea Sir that's why maintenance and regular monitoring is very important on small size Bonsai. And for this tree, I will just maintain it's size to shohin, this type of plant still thicken it's trunk fast even if not to elongate it's trunk. Thank you.

Most desmodiums I see people focusing on creating pads but do you ever just grow it into dense looking canopies? I have a bunch but they are so early in the process.

Dense canopies bonsai may somehow make it more tricky, Developing the girth of the trunk and branches to get just enough balance with the foliage is part of the plan. A proportional Mame/Shohin Size Bonsai is what I intended for this little one. On the otherhand, I have here the mother tree that i let it grow, root escaped to the ground to make a bigger one. These small trees are just newly propagated and a product of air layering.

Question: do you let the plant dry out a bit before wiring so the stems are more pliable?

YES, your right. Exactly.

This technique is commonly applicable for broadleaf trees.
