Hi mc-traveler, great vídeo, thanks. I need your help, maybe a stupid question but, in the three yellow wire, is there any order to connect only two of them? I want to connect the base of the phone holder.
@mc-traveler422

Hi, yes it is a 3 wire harness. Wire 1 is ground, wire 2 is a speed signal, wirde 3 is +12V. So you can use wire 1 and 3 and you get 12V. Also for my TomTom I only use these wires as it has no speed signl input. ! Be aware this is 12V and not 5V! So if your phone holder needs 12V you are good to go.

Dear Mr. Traveler. Although this is an old post: Why didn't you decrease the length of the cable? No you have to tuck away extra cable length. From connector straight to TomTom via windscreen fixture would have done the job? Or am I missing something? Please let me know.

Hi Rob, thank yo for your question. The honest answer is that I did not want to shorten the cables in case i change my bike for another one. Then I can reuse the cable on the next bike in case I need alonger cable. But or course shortening the cables gives a nicer, cleaner installation :-)

@@RumorHazi I believe it is the speed pulse signal which is used if you have the BMW navigator as that navigator is more integrated with more bike specifik features.

I bought the TomTom Rider 410 and would like to connect it to my BMW motorbike F800 GS, but as the bike have 12 V (?) and most GPS need 5 V, I wonder how to do this. We already burned 2 GPS as they received 12 V from the cigarette lighters. The BMW bikes has a special cigarette lighter plug which is smaller that the 12 V one find in a car. The Rider 410 came with a connection plug for the TomTom in one end, but naked wires in the other end. The shop told me that I should get a plug which is easy to fit, but the TomTom will get 12 V and the TomTom Manual on Addendum page state DC5V. Thus I don’t know how to connect it. What to do? Your video is nice. But is the connection you did giving the TomTom Rider 410the 5 V DC it needs? It must not get 12 V as far as I can see? Please email me on donnerup(SPAM)pt.lu replace (SPAM) with @ Thank you. Paul

Dear Paul, sorry for the lat answer. For some reason your message was considered spam and I realised that just nu. The TomTom, if used with the origianl holder/cradle, is designed for 12V input installation as the original wires/holder transform it down to 5V for the GPS unit. But if you connect the GPS via micro USB you need to make sure you have 5V. This is why lighter to USB connectors are bulky. They transform the 12V from the lighter to 5V before sending it out thru the USB connector.

Yes it is safe. This is a 12V auxiliary connection port. It is where BMW connects their GPS is you buy it from them. Furhter the port is connected to the CAN bus system and CANbus will shut down the connection if it draws to much current. The connector I use in the video is an original BMW connector they sell/use for this purpose.

Hi there. I recently bought a R1200GS 2011. And I bought the BMW cable for the gps connector from a local dealer, to connect my TomTom Rider. They then told me that due to the 12v to 5v transformer, the battery could still drain empty due to the transformer working and keeping the canbus awake. This would need a canbus relais to fix the problem. On my own tests the power shut down after some minutes after switching off the contact. With and without the TomTom on the mount. Did you face any battery problems after you connected your TomTom? Thanks for your vid and help!

+Patrick Heinrichs I used the RAM mount included in the Tomtom package. But I have to say I am not too happy with it and will change it for something else. It is simply too bulky for the place I mountet it in and can vibrate as it's arm is a bit long and heavy. For placement on the handlebars I would guess it is perfect.

How do identify which wire is ground and which is 12v ?
@mc-traveler422
5 жыл бұрын
THey are numbered 1 , 2 and 3. Where 1 is ground, 2 is speed puls and 3 is +12V. But if you want to identify the mmanually simply put a voltmeter between the chassi and the wir eyou want to identify and use the diode mode of the Voltmeter so see what wire is connected to the chassi / ground. Use the 12V (low voltage mode) to identify the +12V by putting the - terminal of the Voltmeter to the chassi of the bike and +to the wire you wan tto test. If the Voltmeter reads around 12V this is you + 12V.
