First step is to remove any hardware on the vehicle in this case molding on the top. Be careful to remove this in order to not break it. Always be sure to apply pressure where the clips are.
The next stage is to create a template for the antenna if it doesn't come off easily. Good tip is to make a masking tape template overlapped a masking tape in sequential order, do a 360, then carefully pull it off in the direction that it was applied. And once this temple is made, take a scrap and place it on top. Use the marker to now trace the inside portion of the masking tape. When cutting out the template, be sure to cut on a cutting mat, this is for safety. Now that the template is made, double check that it fits, then apply masking tape to the antenna. This is to lower the surface energy so the material can relax around it.
Next up is cleaning. First, put a squeegee in a microfiber towel and with a soap and water solution, clean all the edges first. Be extra thorough during this process. Once all the edges are clean, then focus on any gaps, like on the side where the molding was, a lot of dirt can build up in here. So be extra thorough during this process. Once all the edges and gaps are cleaned, then clean the main surface area. Once it's clean, clay bar the surface area to make for an optimally smooth surface and then take a microfiber towel to remove any soapy residue from the clay barring process.
The final step is to degrease the surface, be extra thorough during this process and make sure all the edges are degreased as well.
Then with the marker trace where the top of the antenna goes from front to back, pull the roof panel back to the window where the cutting mat is placed. The template that was done at the beginning on top of the roof panel mark the cut out and safely cut it away on the cutting mat. Always be sure that the cutout is enclosed.
Then release the banking paper, always try to release the banking paper underneath the panel to avoid getting on the adhesive side, pull the backing paper roughly one foot past the antenna, cut out, then place the panel over it.
Tack it right on the front as soon as the material covers left or right, pull the material evenly to the side. And then tack it on the passenger and driver side. Remove the entire liner in sections and pull low and flat.
Then starting at the front corners for the material and spread the material out, this will create what's called the glass or no wrinkles. Once there are no wrinkles, simply then squeegee from the front of the antenna towards the front of the vehicle and then back and forth over the squeegee strokes with 45 degree angles and press firmly. Once the material is on the main area, then it's time to tuck the material into the antenna to make sure the film is firmly set.
Then if the material has a cap sheet, in this case, 3M 2080 to remove it, then focus on the corners, pick the material up, heat it to soften it, then form it on. Run a finger to set up the edge and then cut the material at a 45 degree angle on either side of the corner, then cut towards the corner on the edge.
Once it's cut add heat to relax the film and then form it around with the finger, once one corner is done, do the other corner on the same run, pick it up, heat it, relax it, cut it forty five degrees away, then in this case, cut on the opposite side with a very short, shallow blade. So here, cutting on the passenger side, which means the material now is relaxed. Add heat to soften it on the corner. Then once the material is formed on the corner wrinkle free, the material can then be squeezed stress free to the bottom edge of the recessed area.
Keep the squeegee at a 45 degree angle and feed it in, then release the knife tape for a knife free cut on the edge. Remove the excess film and then always come back with the squeegeeing to seal the edge. Repeat the same steps for the other side, if there's a rubber gasket at the front, use the tucking tools to tuck the material behind it.
And for the antenna, always be sure to cut at a 10 degree angle towards the edge. So there's no damage to the vehicle. Once the antenna excess film has been removed, come back with the squeegee and seal it under. And remove the masking tape.
Now reinstall any hardware that was taken off at the beginning.
