This video was very helpful, but I think you might have misssused the term "One shot". A oneshot or Yomikiri, is a finished story that takes place in one sigle tome (two at max) they're shrot stories with a begining and an end. It's true that the plots for this oneshots might later be used as a guide to create a full fledged , multi-chaptered story, but the thing is they stand on their own, they don't need a continuation. Your video was mostly a "How to make a first chapter for your manga" video, which again IS super helpful, but I found it a bit misleading and not what I was looking out for. I'll be sure to take it into consideration once i decide to make an episodic manga however, good job.
@sdpad1899
Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Sorry it was misleading! I think you're right and I'm right hahaha "In the Japanese manga industry, one-shots are called yomikiri (読み切り), a term which implies that the comic is presented in its entirety without any continuation. One-shot manga are often written for contests, and sometimes later developed into a full-length series, much like a television pilot". I see it as that One Piece, Naruto and My Hero Academia's first chapters are all one shots they are all self-contained stories with a beginning, middle and end. Hence why they are much longer than their regular chapters and could easily stand alone as single stories with no contiuation. Haha I've been reading lots of one shots recently that have had no serialisation but they end with the promise of more chapters to come. But obviously One Piece, Naruto and My Hero Academia all become serialised haha but I hope the video still helped a little for a non-serialised One Shot! :D

I think, *Hero academia's setup is more brilliant for this writing style than you think* , Let me explain by adding couple of my observations. Theme: Heroism Dramatic Question: Can a Quirkless Person Become a Hero? Answer: Yes! Because Heroes is are define by the qualities someone have, not by strength. If you lay out these qualities, these are; brave in the face danger, reckless, impulsive, ready to help out for a friend in need, fight for justice even for his hater if needed, don't give up easily, Humble, morally good. and of course somebody who says "My body move, before i can think" when it comes to saving someone. ( So, This is the (ending) truth, you characters will reach at the end (this exact answer), Now, to make it a story you just need to start far away from the truth to make the change more dramatic and interesting for the readers, but don't force it, starting with main character knowing and believing the truth while everyone else believes the lie is also a good setup) Character who will explore the question and reach answers : 1, Deku, a quirk less character but all the above mention Hero's qualities, ( He knows the answer, but need external validation) Deku will just a positive change arc with validation as a center, or ( he believes the truth, while everyone else believes the lie arc) He will begin by doubting his future ( will my hard work will be rewarded?, can I become a hero?). ----------------- Then. Will see his inspiration All might and jump on the chance to get the (answer) validation -------- Get's a disappointed answer and Give up on the idea,------ but when his childhood friend get in danger he jump in save him ----- This action will change all might mind, he will make an exception for deku----- "You Can Become a Hero" 2, All might, Mentor character that will reach the truth, regain his spirit for being symbol of peace a little more and then help, Deku reach the truth. Reasoing: it not deku going though the change but All might, as he is the only one who can validate the answer for deku! Cause he is inspiration behind his dream. So, All might will have lie the character believes to Truth arc! So, He will start the story Weak and with limited power-------- He is disillusioned with his hero life------------ then a young kid, get in his way and ask is it possible for someone powerless to become a hero--------------- Remembering his wounds, he wll answer No ( show his wound ) and leaves feeling bad------ later, he Then encounter a situation where a monster has taken a kid hostage, however find himself unable to transform to help ( he is mentally burn out) -------------- Then, with the action of the same powerless boy from earlier, he will be remind what it truly means to be a hero ( its not superpowers but spirit) ----------- get over himself and transform to defeat the monster -------- at the end change his answer just for deku, find him and tell him personally, "You Can Become a Hero" Combines all together, and throw in some side character for more world building and impact, and you have the First Chapter of My Hero Academia. Hopes it helps someone You

Nice exploration. There are some issues in spelling and presenting the quoted words. At 13:05 "Theme is a posited" -- /`pozitted/, not /poizd/. "Posited" means an assumed fact, a given. The quote is wrong also, it should be "A theory is posited" -- also the correct grammar, it's an adjective, so no "a". Then "is a static given" -- "static" not "statistic". And finally misspelling, in the original quote "It's a premise to be explored", not "premised".

@@sdpad1899 And this is a idea I have. After being inspired by My Hero Academia. I came up with a idea somewhat similar (kinda) to MHA (Well, with the superheros and supervillians society) & One Piece (In term of world-building) & finally Dragon Balls (In term of having the characters go against LITERALLY GODS). Only except it expands across the entire Universe & Multiverse that where the characters existed. And only 10% of those with Bio-Mutation Powers existed across the entire universe and the other 10% are Magic Users/Those with spirit energy/Demons Power/Aliens and etc. And the Planet they lived in. Is actually all the planets in our real life solar system (Neptune, Saturn, Mars etc.) squished and combined into "Planet Gaia" left by the Omni-Presence Beings as the "Celestial" and taking place 11 Millions Years into the future where Humans or Aliens can travel to another planets and be in peace or doing their jobs and etc. Let me know what you think about.

Good advice, but incorrect examples. End-of-chapter questions should be answerable with a "yes" and not unanswerable or result in a "no". Your analysis of internal and external obstacles is disconnected from the last question and cannot be resolved in those first chapters. External obstacles can be visible actions and gestures of the male protagonist, not just physical barriers. "Izuku not standing up for justice" should be the real external obstacle for Izuku, not just "lack of superpowers" - and by then, Izuku's act of "saving Bakugou without superpowers impressed All Might" will truly become a valuable answer.
@sdpad1899
6 ай бұрын
That's why I said in the video these are my interpretations and this is why I love stories as you have your own interpretation of the story. I would disagree on you that I do think you can have an internal struggle and external obstacle in one chapter. Luffy doesn't know what it means to be a pirate (internal struggle) and his external obstacle is the mountain bandit and sea monster that he is yet able to defeat. By the end of the chapter he's able to understand what it means to be a pirate and is now able to defeat the sea monster overcoming both obstacles. This is the same for Naruto whose external obstacle of being unable to make a shadow clone is something he masters at the end of the chapter and his internal lie that nobody cares about him is shown by the end that Iruka had a similar past and shows Naruto he cares deeply for him. In regards to My Hero Academia I agree with you and say in the video that the ending is open ended and he doesn't gain his power until the next chapter. But the thematic question throughout the entire chapter is "Can you become a hero without a quirk?" and this is Izuku's internal struggle that's he trying to find the answer to. I came to the conclusion reading the chapter as all might tells Izuku that he would be unable to be a superhero because the bad guys will have quirks and Izuku would lose those fights. Then Izuku makes allmight remember that anyone can become a hero when he saves Bakugou. This chapter is different to One Piece and Naruto as it has two central characters that have an arc. All Might and Izuku where as One Piece and Naruto only have one main character. I understand so you see Izuku's external obstacle differently to me which is cool! I see where you're coming from. For me the biggest external obstacle for Izuku is that everyone has quirks and he doesn't have one and this isn't resolved by the end of the chapter. I think this is mainly because there are two main characters we follow in the chapter but I also think the narration of the future Izuku completes this first chapter as he states "he will become a great hero" by the end and is a great cliff hanger for us to find out, how does he do this? I think that's why stories are awesome and can be ambiguous with the answers to their questions but if you think they all have to answer the thematic question with "yes" then write your stories like this :D and I have to respectfully disagree with you on the external obstacle being about justice as "justice" is hardly mentioned in the first chapter and is irrelevant to the thematic question. The first chapter in my opinion is trying to the answer the question: "Can you become a hero without a quirk?". Internatal Struggle: Izuku proves to himself he can become a hero without a quirk. External Obstacle: Izuku fights a criminal with a quirk and with help from All Might shows All Might that anyone without a quirk can become a hero. So in my opinion the internal struggle and external obstacle are all related to the thematic question. This is why I also said in the video that I'm not looking at the core themes of the story just the main theme in the opening question. As the theme of "justice" becomes a big theme in the series. I love your take on the video! Thanks for watching it! I'm currently working on two videos at the moment ! :D One of them is another way to write a different type of first chapter. If you're writing anything I'd love to read it!
@lamphan4333

@@sdpad1899 Obstacles, both internal and external, are necessary - I agree. But I mean that your "external obstacles" imposed on Izuku are unresolved at the end of Chapter 1 - and that's not what a story (especially the first chapter) should do. In stories - especially the first chapters, obstacles for the main character are usually resolved by the end of those chapters, enabling the author to ask new questions later. That's the main point of "First chapter = one-shot/pilot episode" that people always talk about. To simplify, when most people think of "not having superpowers", they think of gaining them instead of proving themselves by saving others. Izuku in Chapter 1 didn't seek power, so your point is not... on the point here. He didn't try to prove himself too so... So what struggle does a coward Izuku need to have to later be answered with "having to save people"? Even if someone is mentally weak and powerless, they can still be a hero from the very start as long as they take action. But the author's point in the first half here is that Izuku is still not worthy of becoming a hero until the Bakugo's incident, so it is Izuku's inaction that should be the main deciding factor for the external obstacle - not the Quirkless thing. Perhaps you understand what you mean since you wrote it yourself, but consider how new readers will perceive it. I don't think your two obstacles analyzed from Izuku are good examples, as someone who has worked in the creative field for 6 years. It's worth noting that the formula you set out is perfectly correct. However, the problem-solving step appears to have gone awry. Let's take a closer look at this and see if we can identify the issue together. Here's my take on how to apply your formula to analyze chapter 1 of MHA: - IO: Hesitant to give up heroic dream due to feeling useless. - EO: Not standing up for justice due to perceived inability to act. => "Is it possible for someone like Izuku to become a hero?" "No, it's impossible." Solutions for each of the above obstacles: - IO: All Might recognized Izuku's potential, which gave Izuku the confidence to pursue his dream of becoming a hero. - EO: Bakugo - a childhood friend with a powerful quirk, was endangered while people just watched outside, forcing Izuku to stand up for justice. => "After what happened, is it still possible for someone like Izuku to become a hero?" The answer is yes, it is still possible for him to become a hero.
@sdpad1899

@@lamphan4333 Yeah I agree with you that it needs to be resolved that's why at the end in the narration when Izuku says he's already a great hero that part is resolved but I love oyu analysis. Yeah one thing I missed that's really interesting is that Bakugo someone with a quirk is saved by Izuku! That's an awesome detail! This video was made 2 years ago and I've felt like I've grown as a writer so I agree with the points I made in the video and also I love your points too :D Well for me Izuku doesn't believe he can be a superhero without a quirk that is the question he's searching for and by the end he proves to All Might that anybody can be hero so the question is answered that he can be hero. However this chapter is different to One Piece and Naruto as it has two central characters we follow so some narrative choices were made as All Might also has an arc in this chapter. I really love your take on the E.O and I agree I think my take also coincides with your take but I can see you disagree with that which is cool! I'm not here to argue that haha. I still believe that a thematic questions can be "yes" or "no" or "both". As the case of My Hero Academia is can you be a hero in this world? Izuku proved that anybody can be hero and fight someone without a quirk but you'll need more than courage to be an effective hero in the future. I think the series plays with this idea as the students all get taught that being a hero isn't just fighting it's also supporting one another and helping civilians escape from dangerous situations haha. I'm currently making two videos when I have the time. One of them is another method I've used to make a first chapter haha so I hope you like it! You said you've been in the creative field for 6 years! That's awesome! Is there any work that you've done I could read? Sorry for the long reply I've been super busy at work and with family!

It's like a progression, so firstly you pick a theme and then create a question from the theme and then answer that question with a conclusion though that conclusion doesn't need to be a black and white answer it can be more nuanced. So simply it just these steps: Pick a theme > Ask a question > Reach your own conclusion. Hope this helps :D

@sdpad1899
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I got this message a few times haha I just meant one-shot's that you would give to publishers so they can see the full scope of your story haha. This is of the Wiki Page for One-Shots "One-shot manga are often written for contests, and sometimes later developed into a full-length series, much like a television pilot."
@HASPortraits
2 күн бұрын
@@sdpad1899I loved the video and it's definitely useful for writing both one shots and first chapters, but the first chapter is not what they gave to their publisher or competitions. One piece, Naruto and My Hero have one shots that are different from their first chapters. The one shot is accepted before they can write the first chapter. There are similarities for sure but the first chapter is what they write to keep the audience engaged into a full story. The one shot is what they write to sell the overall theme and world to publishers. Not trying to get you down at all, just an interesting conversation haha. And again, good work!
@sdpad1899
2 күн бұрын
@@HASPortraits Oh yeah I wrote and recorded an entire section on the definition and history of what is a "one shot" but it ruined the overall flow, this video was more focused on story structure. I assumed most viewers watching a video about the writing elements in Manga know what a one shot is haha no worries glad you liked the video! I'm actually thinking of doing a video looking at one-shots that made mangas, I want to try and make more entertaining videos instead of my last 3 videos which is all writing techniques haha any cool video ideas send my way!

@sdpad1899
2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm not 100% sure but basically I thought a One-Shot is usually like a pilot episode in TV terms. Usually a publishing manga like Shonen Jump will put out One-Shots out in that weeks issue and if it gets enough votes back from the readership then they'll start to serialize it. It would be like Breaking Bad's first episode, the opening episode has a beginning, middle and end. If get's good traction then they'll start to do more episodes :D Usually as well a one-shot will have more pages and attempt to show the stories themes, power systems, world building and characters. Sorry I actually wrote this in the video and was going to make it but I didn't know where to put it haha. My bad, there's this cool video you could watch that I like that goes into how to write a pilot episode: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1JiDzY2DkmuDrKw

Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's up to you! I was just making a video showing the similarities between these three shonen manga but I think like Black Clover and Hunter X Hunter also just have one or two paged prologues to set the context of the world. If you think 10 pages is worthy for your story then go for it! Just be critical of your work and ask yourself could I condense my manga's prologue to 6 pages maybe 4 pages? I think my own prologue maybe longer than 1 or 2 pages as I've realised it fits my story better too. Do what you think is the best for the story :D

@@kog6445 I don't know if this is helpful advice or not but this is something I do. If there's a panel or character design or scene that I want to draw or write I'll just do that first because that's what excites me. After that then I'll just keep doing what excites me! Then it all starts to link together. But best thing to do is just bullet point your first chapter of the story beats and write dialogue that you want to add. I usually do this for the entire chapter but strangely what happens once I get halfway through the story changes because the characters do different things and it makes the story feel more organic.
