I love the advice of writing short stories in your setting in order to get familiar with it before you actually write the full novel or novels within it. I would also suggest doing microfiction for the same thing. I love the weekly microfiction prompts on the r/fantasywriters subreddit, and I usually can't help but making my entries be a small vignette of something within my setting. It's really helped me develop a clearer picture and better understanding of my setting while I am in the outlining and worldbuilding phase.

THE EDGE CHRONICLES by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell is one of the most inspiring, original fantasy series ever-the wordbuilding is completely different, up there with Tolkien. And no one really knows about it 😢

Omg you nailed the character stuff (tip 11). And I love how you focused on the interconnectedness of world, character, and plot throughout these tips. My world has a magical resource that mortals don't know how to use... Except a few who discover how to harness it for power and longevity... So the plot is about one without magic (hyu) and one with magic (mage) discovering this dark secret and subverting the dominant paradigm. And of course this leads to the healing of much of the world. All of it's connected, and it's turning out great.

My current favorite is the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks. Related to my other comment, he connects the world, characters, and plot together masterfully, and the whole story is so rich with so much development and raising stakes. Recommend it to anyone who likes high/epic fantasy (or anyone who likes reading books).

It's interesting. I just finished my first dark/epic fantasy novel... first in a 3-4 book series, which I'll be querying in the next month or so, once I get all my beta reader feedback. I struggled with outlines for probably 15 years. I'd spend weeks outlining a chapter or plotline, only to blow it up within 5 pages when I actually got down to writing. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was sort of an extreme case of a discovery writer. Once I ditched the outline process completely (about 2 years ago), I became far more productive. In a way, my world and characters write themselves as things move along. I spend a lot of time thinking about plot and dialog (usually while driving and listening to music), and once things are somewhat cemented in my mind, I sit down and write. But I never never outline anymore, other than leaving a couple sentences on a blank chapter for later, just as a reminder. I found the outline was an artificial constraint that suffocated my world and character development, and that "figuring it out as I went" made my characters and scenarios more organic. I know this isn't a common problem, as most writers use some sort of outline. And my method demands that I know my characters and my world EXTREMELY well, or things can lose direction quickly. But I have heard many writers in various booktube channels complain that they're struggling with outlines. Maybe, in some of those cases, outlines are actually getting in the way.

Finally... The one we’ve all been waiting for... XD Thank you for making this video Favorite Fantasy series atm would have to be Wings of Fire. I love fantasy so much but my wallet screeches anytime I buy more books so I haven’t read as much as I would want :,3 I have 3 story ideas atm, 2 of which are fantasy-one more politically based(?) and the other a dystopian future. It’s hard trying to world build and develop the characters, but it’s been getting easier as I do more research, develop more inspiration, brainstorming, or picture their reactions to certain events I’m thinking of including. It’s a wild ride that’s been running for 1-2 years, and thank you if for some reason anyone decides to read my long comment.

The Crystal Gryphon series by Andre Norton. (A part of her Witch World series of novels.) Written from the POV's of both hero and heroine, these three novels combine fantastic world building, intense action, fascinating magic, mystery, romance and strong characters with relatable arcs. Truly satisfying reads. Warning: These books are addictive!
