Norm McDonald said something I hope I never forget. (paraphrasing) "Too many comics are more concerned with seeming smart than being funny. No one wants to listen to a guy on stage who fancies himself smarter than the audience." On many occasions, I have fallen prey to my own ego, and a joke flopped because I was trying too hard to seem smart.
@katherinegordon5233

maybe,, but I really do enjoy an intelligent comedian, such as Trevor Noah, informative and smart yet funny, it helps to be smart naturally and then go for the funny not the other way around. He is also good with voice impersonations and physical comedy. I do not really enjoy vulgarity, do you think that the vulgarity is easier to do or that some people prefer it?

I love your honesty but as a fellow someone who has tried his hand at writing jokes I would like to offer a defence for you! Perhaps maybe you had tried on occasion to be clever in your joke writing. I haven't met you but I can safely bet that you wrote with the intention to be funny first. The distracting second was that you inadvertently included a sound or be clever clause in your joke also. You will no doubt agree with me that no way in hell did you write a joke to be clever exclusively. Ofcourse not! Funny was your main motive. And so I want you to revisit those jokes and moments and recognise that your want to be funny first had you write anything at all. Thank god you are writing! I worte jokes that weren't funny first. I tried them and bombed. Later I rewrote one joke that bombed evey time but now lands every time. My support for you then here is, revisit your clever jokes. Can you write the clever out of them and are those jokes funny conceptionally without cleverness being a feature. I wrote a joke recently with word play. I got the laugh when I dumbed my wording and reduced my word use. The joke worked now because of its new simplicity. I got out of the jokes way. I wrote it and told it but my listeners understood it as if they write it themselves. Be the vessel, not the reason. You are on that path though, so word of support from this stranger

I'm not sure what it's called, but I love when a comedian tells a gag, then later unexpectedly links in a later bit with that gag....and sometimes does it several times. E.g. I think it's Steward Francis who does the gag about his parents taking him fishing and the gag is that he has to swim home....then later he mentions going to disneyland...and say "as I was swimming back to shore..' LOL

"A callback, in terms of comedy, is a joke that refers to one previously told in the set. The second joke is often presented in a different context than the one that was used in the initial joke. Callbacks are usually used at or near the end of a set, as the aim is to create the biggest laugh at the end of a comic set. The main principle behind the callback is to make the audience feel a sense of familiarity with the subject matter, as well as with the comedian. It helps to create audience rapport. When the second joke is told, it induces a feeling similar to that of being told a personal or in-joke."

I'm very curious about the study of joke writing. I've been a touring comic for 17 years and I think it's extremely hard to quantify joke writing without stealing the soul out of it. I want so badly to have the equivalent of music theory but for joke writing. I have yet to find a book or podcast that actually has captured the attention of even the most bitter joke writer. Not looking for novice advice. I've done TV and want to go deeper in my understanding, any suggestions?
@JerryCorley
2 жыл бұрын
Respect. Not to be argumentative, but I think your idea of “Stealing the soul out of it” if you quantify it, is all in your head. Engaging the purity of your soul through emotional connection to your POV, the audience, the concept through the architecture of the material is the performer’s craft. Knowing why the joke, gets a laugh is our responsibility as craftsmen. Just as a master guitarist knows how to create tension and release and make that guitar sing, a comedian should be aware of the vast array of tools at his disposal to grip the audience, take them to the teetering point and get them (with high odds) to release in laughter, or applause. It doesn’t always come together exactly as you want it to, but the odds are in your favor. And that’s just the writing part. What I enjoy is challenging the audience’s perception and giving them a different look at things. One definite way to take it to that next level is to make the audience say something like, “shit, I never thought about it that way.” The problem with the “bitter joke writer” is that they’re spoiled and settled in their current ability. Their bitterness is deeply seeded in a belief that this is the way it is. And this is all there is. And I’ve learned all there is to learn. They’re as stubborn as the nine-to-fiver who stops at the liquor store on his way home from work on Friday then sits in his Lazy-Boy all weekend till he sees the bottom of the bottle. No growth, no exploration, no new discoveries. That’s probably what makes them bitter. I appreciate what you said. I hear you. I’m gonna wrap my head around it and see what possible solutions or guidance or whatever bitter comics would care to hear and see if I can help them flip a switch.

I would personally like to congratulate Jerry Corley on his recent partnership with Tanqueray Gin. I was surprised to see them part ways with their long running edgy black spokesman and also doing away with the catchy motto, "Ready to Tanqueray". But after seeing they are taking a more modest and honest approach, I completely understand and agree with the direction they are pursuing. Tanqueray "Dry. Sappy Taste. Somehow Moderately Popular." PS. I like Gin and Jerry. Lol He is doing a great service to those with the patience and will to learn. He my not be everyone's cup of tea but he definitely knows the in and outs. Just thought of this joke as I was watching this clip and couldn't help myself. Cheers and good luck to you all!

I have the fear of people stealing my jokes after working them out. They come from my brain and to do a open mic and somebody steal or even change my idea really pisses me off.

Use that fear in your routine. Create a humorous story about you murdering someone who stole your material at a previous gig and then tell that story in your act.

Think of it this way: if you have material worth stealing. you’re doing great. Keep creating that quality material. The only solution to joke theft is to pump them out faster than they can steal them. Keep climbing and the thieves won’t be able to catch up. Even if they do... well look what happened to Mencia and Dance Cook. The biggest villains in our era of comedy XD

The body of a 40-year-old woman was found in a processing plant for McDonald's restaurants. The coroner's report stated that the lady mistook the processing plant for a McDonald's store and died of malnutrition while waiting for someone to take her order. I found out I could make people laugh the first time I walked into the shower room in phys ed. Speaking of phys ed, I flunked phys ed so bad that at the end of the year on my report card I was declared legally dead. One day my teacher sent a note home to my parents that read, Eddie needs to work on his phys ed class. My dad says, maybe you need to work out a little son. I said I am, He said what are you doing? I said I'm taking at the least taking ten extra breaths a day. Now my older brother, he was a jock in school. But he had a very bad case of homophobia and he hated taking showers with other guys after a game or a practice. He had homophobia so bad, he wouldn't even bend over and pick up the soap in his own shower. One day he came home and took a bar of soap, drilled a hole through it, put a string through it, tied the string in a big loop and hung it around his neck. I ask him, what the hell is that? He said this way you can never drop your soap. I call it, no poke soap. The name was later changed to soap on a rope. So now you know.
