Even more than the rights issue, building a Harry Potter land in the UK would really hurt Orlando. The Harry Potter lands are practically pilgrimage sites for British people, so having them across the pond would devastate attendance stateside. I am very curious if a Lord of the Rings land will ever happen, but I'm not going to bother thinking about it much. Epic Universe is already rumored to be getting expansions first - Nintendo, Monsters and Potter - and the other two parks have new lands on the way - Zelda and Pokémon. While it could definitely happen in the UK, it's a good decade from happening at Epic Universe. Which is probably a good thing for the UK's chances...
@themainstreetnews

That’s certainly a good point. Whatever they do build in the UK (hopefully) it cannot cannibalise Orlando’s offering. I feel strongly that a large scale fantasy world is something Universal wants for each park, which would be amazing if it happens with LOTR!

LOTR is so big that they could use Toon Lagoon and Marvel Island, and even build new lands in Epic based on Middle-Earth. Anyway they should be based ONLY in Peter Jackson's movies and forget totally the terrible Amazon series.

You know what would be really sweet is a Pirates of the Caribbean style dark ride in the Hobbiton area, where you ride through the town during Bilbo's famous birthday where Merry and Pippin steal the fireworks, leading to Frodo's journey out of Hobbiton; it could even exit you into Rivendell! Then the more perilous E-Ticket could be saved for the Rivendell portion of the park. I think the concept of doing both, like the blueprint set out in the Wizarding World (Hogsmeade/Hogwarts V Hobbiton/Rivendell) is a great idea, and I'm sure Universal would nail the scale. I can see them using it to launch Universal GB and then building another in Epic Universe 5 years later or something.

There was a mini LOTR experience in Toronto 20+ years ago. WETA worked with the Royal Ontario Museum and Casa Loma and created two exhibitions to promote the movies. They built a full size replica of Bilbo's writing area at Bag End, then sections of the Dead Marshes (complete with submerged corpses), Torture chamber of Barad Dur, Gates of Moria, Lothlorien, Caverns of Isengard, Rivendell, Prancing Pony, Golden Hall, Fangorn Forest, Osgiliath, Edoras, Helm's Deep, Orthanc, Isengard caverns, Henneth Annun caves and waterfall, and an assortment of props and costumes from the movies. It was really well done. They did it for the first two movies and then moved it to the Boston Science Museum for the third one which was nowhere near as well done. If Universal is going to do this, they should talk to the people at WETA who did those exhibitions.

For sure, WETA would most definitely have to be involved in the creative process of everything regarding a possible LOTR land. It would be great if many of the original producers and people that worked on the movies came back, like Jackson himself. It would make sense if some of the actors returned as well, similarly to what happens in the Wizarding World!

I’d love to see them make a Hobbit land rather than Lord of the Rings, with the Shire and Rivendell as shopping and dining areas, a Mirkwood walkthrough, a Misty Mountains indoor coaster through the goblin mines with a Gollum scene, a barrel themed river rapids and a lonely mountain dark ride. Imagine the Smaug animatronic 😍

@@themainstreetnews The idea is that it's a much smaller and more contained story. So with just one land and not an entire theme park, you could more easily get a feeling of a story being told by the land (as through attractions, retail, and shopping you're taken all the way through all the major story beats from Hobbiton to the Lonely Mountain). Hobbit has the same design and architectural language as the LotR so I don't think fans would be too upset...

I'd love it to be built in the rumoured UK Universal Park. The 'obvious' lands to do would be Rivendell (Elven town) because of how beautiful it'd look, Hobbiton (Hobbit rolling hills and houses and little bridges etc), Mirkwood Forest, Misty Mountains and Mines of Moria (Dwarven mines), with a Prancing Pony (pub) somewhere too :) The ride I feel lends itself immediately to a theme park is the Mines Of Moria, a Dwarven rail cart ride similar to Thunder Mountain but indoors and wonderful perspective spaces to show the great depth of it, with a Balrog end monster similar to the Yeti ride. I'd love to see some sort of large ride like a Jurassic Park boat ride starting at Rivendell and travelling through Mirkwood Forest with large moving Ents (equivalent of a t-rex animatronic), large Mirkwood Spiders and ending at the end of the Forest at Misty Mountains with Smaug the Dragon and the piles of gold. Hobbiton would lend itself to a more child friendly track ride where you sit inside a horse & cart travelling through Hobbiton, little rivers, bridges, hobbit houses etc. Food places could be Prancing Pony (pub), Hobbiton House, Rivendell Grand Hall, Tom Bombadil's House

Middle earth is too large for just a land, it should be a massive extension plan over years with at least 3 lands, one for each movie. Baggins, Rivendell and Moria for the first land. Rohan and isengar for the second and Gondor / Mordor for the third. Or just a full LOTR parc, it would be so amazing !

I'm with those who say some things of such beauty shouldn't be so trivialized. BUT, LOTR is something that is experienced, and a REALLY well made park could do just that. I will say that a clothes shop in the Shire would put much heartache to rest. How relieving it would be to just have a rack properly made Hobbit clothes lined up by size which you can then just HAVE. Same for literally every other location.

This would be absolutely HUGE. And I’ve actually been saying this for years. With the build out W of HP has received-there’s SO MUCH Universal could do with LOTR property. If they decide to build a LOTR IP park inside Epic Universe, it is game over. Disney will be eating Universal’s dust for decades, if not permanently. It would be THE destination park and they would straight own Orlando.

It should be a Middle Earth Land ie Hobbit and LOTR. I'm guessing Nintendo Land is finished. ..Anyhow the barrel rides from the Hobbit and any attractions involving Smaug and flying eagles have potential. A motion ride following Gandalf and the Balrog would be cool too. Lots of potential with Ents, Gollum, Hobbit, Dwarf, and Elven food. Hopefully it happens - But I think Harry Potter is more perfectly suited for theme parks even though I prefer LOTR as a book and movie a lot more.

I think Marvel and the MCU have their best days behind them as far as the general public's interest goes. I grew up in the late 70s and 80s (I'm old lol) with Cap, Spidey, Hulk etc.. so I will always love Marvel for more sentimental/nostalgic reasons. But kids today have their own properties they like and, along with the general public, have moved on from the MCU. Harry Potter and LOTR reach a large range of ages and will likely stand the test of time in popularity so it makes sense to use land like that for either Nintendo expansion or LOTR.

On top of what others have said, It’d be cool to see a boat/dark ride with some of the main moments of Sam and Frodo’s journey with the ring. Seeing the big spider, Sauron’s eye and fighting with gollum to throw it into the volcano. Also I could see a hobbit expansion with an intense Smaug themed coaster where you encounter him before getting launched. It would also be so cool if they could make a realistic looking version of the eye to have looking over a whole land and watching you.

I doubt they would do that. It’s too similar to Harry Potter so it won’t be in the same park as a Harry Potter land. HP has shown to be a cash cow for them so it’s not smart to try and do LoTR when they can just make more Potter lands and cash in. Potter has more female fans as well and women spend more money than men. LoTr fans are generally older. It would be cool but I don’t think it would happen.
@themainstreetnews

It is indeed a similar world to Harry Potter, but there’s so many possibilities when it comes to the rides and world building that it can be quite different in a theme park. I don’t believe we’ll see Hogwarts and Rivendell side by side, but if they go with Epic Universe, that Harry Potter land will be set in Paris, completely different than anything LoTR could become. Or even in the UK where they (reportedly) can’t use HP, LoTR could come in and become an icon of that park attracting worldwide attention, whereas the same wouldn’t happen with another Wizarding World clone.

No. Some things should not be turned into theme parks. This is no mere movie franchise we're talking about. It's one of the greatest literary works of the last century, and to turn it into a theme park full of rides and souvenir shops would cheapen it.
