I think you are right.. im not surprised, mainly because i feel he was taking it extra easy at the tour, got good lower effort mileage in, then had rest up times got back to 100% and smashed a 1 day race.. Pogi and Wout coming 2nd and 3rd after their TDF performances was probably more impressive, the fatigue these guys built up over the 3 weeks must be incredible and they nearly were able to keep up with MVDP so his performance was human in nature, considering he was lower efforts and had more chill days. Now lets talk about Jonas putting in 1min 40 on EVERYONE in the tour, that is not natural, even Wout said "he was the best of the "NORMAL" guys after the stage.

The last week of the Tour MVDP was just taking it easy with the WC in his mind because the lay-out in Scotland was perfect for him. Re: financing bikes. Your note about the financially connected is pretty accurate. I (and the people I ride with) can afford an S-Works SL8 cash, but may have to pull money out of investments and pay capital gains taxes. I could put it on a credit card but would have to repay it quickly because I never carry credit card balance. And even though interest rates are now 5%+, the US tech companies like Klarna that offer financing on bikes are still giving 0% interest loans. They're hoping people will over commit and miss payments and owe thousands in fees. But even for people with the cash, a 0% interest installment plan is an obvious choice.

About Van Der Poel, I thought he did well to conserve energy the whole race. He made one or two attacks, but he was nowhere near as active as Pogačar for example, who attacked a bunch of times, got caught out and had to close the gap on multiple occasions, and had less help from teammates. Wout also exchanged a couple of attacks with the rest of Belgium team, and was overall more active. Not to mention, in crit style races, someone that is technically sound can conserve so much more energy by not surging. After the winning attack from VDP, he was also able to ride hard in his own pace, and the trio behind was surgingm attacking eachother and was at that point psychologically beaten. If we're talking about doping, or just incredible level of these riders, I think all four-five that were in the mix should be questioned equally or not at all.

I think Chris's point about how people get influenced to buy one bike or another is a good one. On a long group ride, tech/bike chat is inevitable, and everyone wants to know the opinions of the fastest people in the group because it's assumed they know what they're talking about, and at least in my experience they mostly ride pretty nice bikes. If you see those bikes week after week ridden by guys who are faster than you, it's only natural that you'd start to associate that bike with a higher level of performance. I think in a way that's even potentially more likely to influence someone than a pro's bike would. Because while you can easily dismiss a pro on a particular bike because they're paid to ride it, the fast guy in your group ride could have had anything and chose an SL8, or an S5, etc. The same kind of chat happens with training. No one asks the slow guy what kind of plan he's on. You want advice from and you want to emulate the people who are faster than you.

Strava needs Seasons, every 3 months or whatever there is a reset for the current season and that's the main leaderboard. Keep the all time leaderboard available and in the background but its not the main thing. This way every few months (or year) there is a race to set the fastest times on the popular segments. Then give people virtual trophies or something for having the top time on a segment in each season, maybe even create special trophies for the most popular/iconic segments for every region. I think this would make strava way more engaging rather than it being a "look what I did" social network.

Anyone who buys a complete bike at these prices is a numpty. You could easily build the top model to a very similar spec with a few minor changes by buying a frame only option and building it yourself. The frame only option used to be the expensive choice!
@ynie1
Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what I numpty is, I guess that's a UK term. I don't think it would that much cheaper building each part individually. Using US prices: Frame: $5500, wheels (Roval CLX II) $2800, groupset (SRAM Red AXS with Power Meter) ~$4000. Just those three pieces adds up to $12,300. Then add in handlebars + tape, saddle, tires, tubes, ect... let's call it another $1000, then you'd be at $13K+. Most shops will charge at least $500+ for a build fee if you don't want to build it yourself. At least going through a bike shop, you'd be getting support if anything went wrong, and free tune ups for a year.

Before that he did the same (maybe on a lower tier, but still) in races like Tour of GB 2019, Arctic race of Norway 2018, winning the Dutch NC 2018. I have S-Works bikes; an Epic, an Aethos and a CruX. I built them from frames I bought, and saved a bit on the custom pack of components so they'd be my own projects. I had the money saved up and paid cash for the biggest chunks which kept the balance of the purchase off of my credit cards as I didn't want the interest penalties. as to WHY, well it's simple. I raced bikes for nearly 30 years, and spent the first two decades either on junk bin builds or whatever I could scrounge out of regional team or sponsorship deals. It was always basic or midrange workman tier stuff that I could afford to crash at the weekend crit and replace if something got broken. Now that I'm over 50 with a very well paid corporate job and disposable income, I'm buying the stuff that I always dreamed about having when I was a Cat 2 scrounging for rides. I ride the HELL out of my bikes, take immaculate care of them, and tend to turn them over / trade them in every couple years just so that I can get decent value back from our local pro consignment shop towards my next high end build. I don't race anymore but I do ride a lot and there is nothing like having a "dream bike" underneath you, it's inspiring. I love working on, looking at, and riding all of my "dentist bikes" and they inspire me to pile on the miles now that I don't have to kill myself with interval sets.

mvdp famously trains really hard when targetting a goal. I think his main goal for July/August was a stage win at the tour and worlds. In the past he has over trained which may have been the cause of him getting ill in the tour which then meant he took his foot of the gas there, to then focus on the worlds. I am sure he would have loved to have won a stage at the tour, and maybe he could have even though he wasn't 100%, but he was happy to sacrifice that to give himself the best shot at the Worlds. If you look at the rest of the guys in the top 4 at worlds, WVA did a lot of work at the tour to try and get a stage win and to help Jonas in gc, Pog obviously came 2nd and Pedersen again was doing a lot at the tour to get a stage win and to help Ciccone with the KOM jersey. Taking all that into account mvdp probably had the best recovery and preparation going into the worlds, regardless of his illness, compared to the others,. If you then add his technical ability, his willingness to lose the race and force others to chase, and his physiology to attack on those short climbs I do not think his performance at worlds is that surprising.

If these exotic bike make a significant difference for anyone except the top riders, then we should have races with bikes separated by classification, like all the different types of motor racing. I think part of the issue with financing a bike is that the interest rates are so high. A car loan is in the single digits while Afterpay/Affirm are generally double digits and often double the rate. The monthly payment on a USD 9500 bike over 36 months is about the same as my payment on a minivan. There ought to be better financing options, but it's hard to find a reasonable collateral for that type of loan.

That goes for all the big one-day races like LBL, Milan San Remo, etc. So, to me, it was not a surprise what he did, just enjoyed it.

Totally agree about the Garmin climb in Australia, it's absolutely rubbish here in the Dandenong Ranges, Melbourne. Easily the most popular climbs in the city and it's woefully inaccurate for me. Alerts telling me I've finished the climb 50m-100m before I reach the top and the very distinct or the most popular climbs are inaccurately mapped (climbs continuing long after you've passed the official finishing point). Have turned it off until it's actually accurate.

Honestly I starting to lose it with you guys. How can he be so different in 2 weeks? He didn’t race the Tour!!!! He helped out his sprinter occasionally, the rest of the time he was recovering from whatever ailed him and then he used the Tour as training. Everybody who paid any attention knows this and you even mention it yet you block it out and then say I don’t know how he did it. This was a great prep for the Worlds and many pros have done much the same.

Fully agree that his tdf wasn’t as shitty as many people say. Did the km’s and helped out the team. We all know how strong MvdP is in one day races and let us not forget …… normally speaking the WC are in September and the winner has almost always participated in the Tour of Spain….. having the hardness and miles in the legs…. This was for MvdP perfect a WC 2 weeks after the TDF which he finished as a practice for this event. He should have been number one favorite with any one who calls him/her self a cyclist expert/analyst.

There’s a famous BJJ player Marcelo Garcia who said if you don’t see zero you never truly see ten. When referring to activity levels and relaxation etc. I think a little of mvdp’s and pogacars success is the fact that they’re very relaxed and easygoing. Mvdp’s peaks are crazy and that might have a bit to do with the fact he doesn’t have to flog himself in the mountains for a teammate or deal with a newborn or the Belgian pressure cooker like Wout does.

Wrt finance this is something I was surprised with also when chatting to people. It’s crazy. I can afford any of those bikes and have plenty of cash but just bought a 2018 TCR SL DA for 3k over the bikes you had on the list - mainly because its lighter and its not easy to get stock - i did try. I dint buy the “investment” option for the finance and basically it hardly ever works out. Anyone who really has cash isnt worried about 20k in that bracket its not that much when you are in that level tbh

Why it’s always dentist and doctors 😅? I’m a doctor, I took my SL7 frame only on a 30% discount last year, equipped it with my old shimano di2 11 speed and Firecrest 404, and I’m not gonna upgrade with anything anytime soon..it just works, and almost nothing better enough to warrant all the trouble and cost of upgrade for probably like 3-4 years to come.. . I have some insight on bike prices since I got deals with an undisclosed US distributor. At Pro-Price / Industry Price (Not MSRP) the average full bike price with frames at MSRP, are 46% higher than the individual parts and assembly price. Keep in mind that the Pro/Industry price is still higher than the bulk price for parts and that the Frames aren't Pro/Industry priced. The funny part is... Cannondale full bike Pro/Industry prices are lower than other big brands. The best major brand full price bikes for consumers are Time Cube and Canyon. You did not hear this from me.

The SL8 aero claims are moderate because aerodynamic science and materials science all lead to the same point, and we are quickly approaching a singularity. It's like Moores Law in computing, what was once thought to be infinite is closing in on an endpoint. Its why all bikes generally look alike, if you have the same cookie recipe, you can all go off and make them in secret, but if you follow the recipe exactly they will all taste the same. I do think the weight reduction is significant in the SL8. regarding MVDP, I wouldn't glance over the cycloross/MTB so fast, this generation of riders (WvA, Tom Pidcock etc.) are more nimble and athletic because of that background and it gives them a leg up on the previous generation

MVDP - Just incredible to watch i was proper on the edge of my seat. Great call on the TT by the way! Strava - torn - part of me says leave it not everyone can be a KOM etc. Other part says they need to do something to set real world challenges. Like the "local Legend" but with segment times? So you get:- 1). KOM / QOM 2). Time Legend (30-90 days) 3). Local Legend With the various other topics in this show - are hobby cyclists just getting too carried away and the brands beginning to take the mickey due to this? Prices of bikes and god forbid financing them / skinsuits etc for iddy biddy teeny gains - everyone on waxed chains and aero gear, chugging on Ketones - when in reality they just need to ride more consistently and eat normal food and enjoy being on a bike in 90% of cases (myself included) - i'd be better off losing 5kg than wearing aero socks......lol. Talking of food - this fuelling like the pro's thing - 100g carbs an hour - is this really nessesary for a club ride? Not riding anywhere near a pro level so why bung in that amount of fuel? Did you see the triathlete video who basically claimed he gave himself diabetes due to his massive carb rich diet (albeit it looked pretty junk food based).

A lot of financing is offered at very favorable terms for consumers, and the seller is basically eating a single-digit-percent cost (I've heard 6%) to subsidize the sale. The theory being they take a margin cut on those sales, but get additional volume. Back before interest rates went up, you could get pay-over-time (e.g., 1 year) financing at 0% without impacting the sticker price. I don't know what those rates are like now but when it's that cheap it seems like a no-brainer. I'm not surprised shops saw rates as high as 25-33%.

Another good show boys. For Strava I wish there was a way to separate out single riders from those riding in a group. There are a number of unattainable KOMs near me due to obvious lead out situations. It would also be interesting to see a "normalized" leaderboard that adjusted times to a static, no wind, 70deg F day (nothing official, just out of curiosity).

Interesting you bring up people thinking that the Merida Reacto isn't comparable to the SL8 when Merida has owned 49% of Specialized since 2001. By no means are the SL8 and the Reacto identical bikes but I'd have to imagine the two brands share resources and knowledge. Pretty sure that Merida don't even sell bikes in the US as well.

VDP was the strongest in his attack, and the group chased for a bit, but when they couldn't get to him anymore (I can't remember, last 15-20k), they started group 2 tactics, trying to secure a 2nd/podium.

about the allegations (kinda), in the tour first of all MvdP was ill after the first week and had a anti biotics course, at the end of the tour he still had a cold (you can hear that in his interviews too). secondly there were cyclists saying he did interval training during the mountain stages from the groupetto to go in front, waiting the groupetto and repeating that. so he used the tour as a training stage. and lastly he just isnt a grand tour rider, he is a one day specialist. and lastly his biggest skill (which is also known in the peloton) is that he is the best in the world in dropping many 1000 watt bombs during a race (intervals), which is also why he is the best cyclo cross rider in the world. this parcours with the 400+ corners and 600 meter climbs were ideal for MvdP. for ppl like Evenepoel thats very hard to do, he is more someone who can keep 400-450 watt for hours straight, but he isnt good at dropping 100+ 1000 watt bombs (he also explained this in an interview). So yea, you can ofcourse doubt MvdP, but its his specialty and he is the best in the world at it, its also why he falls short to ppl like Pogacar on longer climbs, cuz thats more Pogacars specialty and why Pogacar beats MvdP on those courses. so everyone has their own specialty and the parcours will show that in the end, like it did in this worlds. but who knows, maybe the only reason he is better then the rest is because of what you guys are suggesting.
