I like most of the content from this channel, but this one is laughably bad and shallow. To suggest that Hawaii was a “settlement colony” for the Polynesians for centuries before the Tahitians arrived is ludicrous. The Tahitian islands are the closest large islands from Hawaii, and it was a dangerous voyage that likely took several weeks to make - it was a one way journey for the Tahitians, or any other people that went to Hawaii. Discovering Hawaii was an accident most likely due to Polynesians who were fleeing their home island due to war or famine. As for the romanticizing of the pre-colonization days, the reality was that life was extremely hard and tough for most Hawaiians except for the ruling class. One owned nothing and likely had to constantly fight as the various tribes were always at war. And society was so strict under the Kapu system that the common people were always under stress. The Noble Savage image that some White historians push is cringe…

they followed sharks by figuring out their mating cycles. some sharks always give birth off the coast. they followed the migratory albatross by theorizing it'd have to take them to land eventually. it took generations of voyagers always predicting a little bit further and taking longer and longer journeys. Mind you, these canoes were uncovered and paddling is HARD work. generations of men committed to a cause. They never knew who would see the end of it.

@@kanakahawaii6860 @11onme808 Yes. But you need to realize you can only learn directions based off stars. They knew that albatross stop on land. They knew that sharks birth near coasts. It was a combination of generations worth of knowledge. Polynesians had been sailing islands across so much of the world since before the modern Hawaiian Islands were even above the ocean. Using just stars to navigate to unknown lands would just be sailing with guesswork and hope. They used knowledge of earth and animals to find new lands.

It's worth pointing out that the title of this video implies that Hawaii WAS colonized at some point, but it never officially was. Many believe that because James Cook discovered the islands for Britain and the flag of the Kingdom of Hawaii contains the Union Jack, that they were apart of the British Empire. The flag in actuality was the direct creation of King Kamehameha I who, upon seeing the British flag, used it as the basis to create Hawaii's own flag. The Kingdom of Hawaii was a marvel for its time - being one of the few pacific islands to never be colonized, and actually hold good relations with many major powers of the time. Who embraced Christianity and its Western values without force very early on. Who created a unique culture and people all of their own. I hope Hawaii, and other places that have unique cultures of their own (Texas, the South, the Midwest, etc.), will work on reviving, celebrating, and embracing their culture, while not letting the whitewashing that's been seen happening in major cities all over the world affect them. As a descendant of natives who lived on the islands during the time of the Kingdom, I pray for that.

What do your ancestors have to say about the following. Why is Iolani Palace and Chinatown buried in 12 feet plus of mud. With the mud being deeper on the backside of Iolani Palace facing the Punch Bowl volcano/ ancient tree stump. Why are there no graves before 1850 or trees older than 1850. With the weather here there should be many old trees. Also the nearby mountains have very deep scarring from a massive rainfall that there seems to be no or any written history of.

Everyone there tells about how there was a never ending war among the two tribes, each from opposing sides of the island... until finally one side won... and they all think they came from the winning side... which implies genocide... now don't it? Even this deceptive 'documentary' admits that there were indeginous people on Hawaii before the... next wave of settlers (who currently identify as Hawiaans)... arrived... So... where did the aborigonies go? Genocide again? I'm not saying that modern Western culture is divine... but you gotta stop saying the more ancient people were divine and free from the exact same savage nature and attrocities that you accuse their conquerers of. This is more than stretch to consider a culture that acquired a few artifacts of metal from other cultures as 'having metal'. Any reasonable understanding of what having metal means is that they possess the knowledge and technology to forge, to create metal in raw form ,and to craft it into useful instruments. Some tribes of the American Indian possessed a few artifacts left over from the Spanish conquistadors, but that does not means they had 'metal' as a society or technology.

Hawaiians were not 'Introduced to the world' in 1776. Captain Cook was introduced to the world around that time. Just because there wasn't any regular contact doesn't mean they didn't know how to travel 'around the world'. Polynesian wayfinders proved they could sail thousands of miles across the oceans to islands they had never been to but knew from ancestral teachings. The Pacific is 2 thirds of the planet. They managed to populate anything worth populating. To think they didn't find, traded, or x'd out potential threatening lands (mostly continents) is simply Eurocentric hubris.
