I have done the "all you can eat pancake" thing, cheese quesadillas, cheese sandwiches w/cucumbers and radish sprouts, tomato sandwiches (LOVE), pasta tossed with butter, garlic and parmesan, quiche and, thanks to the large bags from the LDS cannery, refried bean burritos! We also had lots of variations of Welsh Rarebit! Basically, cheese sauce on bread. Also, Raclette! Basically, melted cheese on boiled red potatoes. We use the Flagship cheese from Costco, but really any good melting cheese (or prepped cheese sauce mix) will work.

Great ideas! Have you ever made your own refried beans? I cannot eat canned beans of any kind so I cook them from dried. For the refried beans I cook a pound or two of pinto beans in my crockpot for about 13 or 14 hours, after they are cooked i fry up some bacon cut in very small pieces, add beans and mash, usually have to add some bean water and cook and mash to get a creamy consistency then add cheddar cheese until melted. Yummy! I freeze them in sandwich bags which is about a can size.

1 thing we do to save a bit of money is my family adores whole berry cranberry sauce. A single tiny can here is $1.50 and who knows what all is really in it. Right around Thanksgiving is the only time we can buy fresh cranberrys in the stores. I buy up about 6 pounds make my own sauce (which lets me reduce the sugar) and can it in half pint jars (water bath canning). That yields me about 24 jars for around $9 and we can enjoy home made cranberry sauce all year long.

For cost savings and removing chemicals , since I live in Toronto, Ontario Canada I have started making my own, laundry detergent, all purpose cleaners, toothpowder, deodorant, soap, lotions, I went no poo, I make my own ACV, I purchase as much organic and non gmo as possible, I make most of the foods my husband and I consume, I make my own yogurt, cream cheese, kombucha, vegetable stock (using scraps from veggies and this replaces all stock needed in cooking)...I make my own hair spray and use only homemade air fresheners. Home made dishwasher detergent as well as hand dish soap and hand soap. This journey began in early 2016 when researching DIY hair stuff. I have noticed a huge savings in the household budget and I feel better knowing I saved a landfill from excessive packaging and the water from pouring chemicals down the drain and us from exposure to the chemicals and yuck in the store bought products. Sooooo. .NOW a canner and a dehydrator! And the vegetti pasta veggie maker is on my wish list! Your bread always looks yummy Krista ! Thanks for the ideas! God bless! Doris < >

The ribbon style potatoes is ALWAYS my go-to special treat if we go to a street fair in the area, so being able to make these at home would be super amazing lol, and way cheaper, it kills me to pay what they charge, I can get a couple BAGS of potatoes for that price. I have found that getting the kids who are old enough involved in the process of gardening that it makes them much more likely to eat it. By the way, I use you guys' pizza dough recipe, with it being such a large batch though we only use about a third to half of it, depending on who all we are feeding, so I turn the remainder into soft pretzels, it's amazing. I get LOADS of requests for the recipe and I always tell everyone to look on your channel. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

I can dry pintos in bulk. When we want refried beans I drain and rinse a quart. Then I mash it with a few tablespoons of homemade lard (which is much healthier than most folks think). The lard adds nutrition and creaminess to the beans. I flavor with some garlic powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and a dash of paprika. Sometimes I mince and saute an onion to add in as well. SO GOOD!!! :D
@moderndeserthomestead
8 жыл бұрын
I love refried beans! Here is what I do: Soak 4 cups of beans overnight. I use 3 cups pinto beans and 1 cup black beans. Heat 4 T coconut oil in a pan. Saute 2 chopped onions, 4 cloves of garlic, and 1 fresh jalapeño. While these are sautéing, drain beans and place in slow cooker. To the slow cooker, add 1/4 cup coconut milk, 3 T cumin, 2 T paprika, 1 T chili powder, 1 dried chipotle chile, 1 dried guajillo chile, and black pepper to taste. When onions, garlic and jalapeño are softened, add the veggies and oil to the slow cooker. Add water just to cover. Slow cook for 8 hours or until the beans are soft. Remove chipotle and guajillo chiles. Add salt to taste and puree with immersion blender to desired texture. I freeze them in the small canning jars if I need to save them.

I love fruits & certain veggies for snacks! As a Type 2 diabetic I have to keep an eye on the sugars, especially processed sugar. Currently the only sugar used is for my coffee...told the doc that there is NO chance of that changing. But the rest is all natural sugars like in fruits...I love mandarin oranges (clementines too), Japanese plums (got 2 trees in the yard) & cucumbers (with ranch dressing), pickles, cherry/grape tomatoes, honeydew melon, cantaloupe...just all kinds of stuff like that! Sadly we can't do a garden here as it's a rental house but when we get the property I'm going hog-wild :)

DUDE! Have you tried Stevia for your sugar? It's sweeter than sugar, but is NOT a sugar so not only can diabetics have it, there are studies that show it HELPS. I will admit, it does have an after taste, my wife does not care for it, but I like it. If you check it out, get it as raw an unprocessed as possible... we are growing it to dry out, and grind up ;)

My seven year old loves going out and picking the squash blooms in the morning. Throw a little panko on it or fill with a chunk of cheese and we fry them up as a side for breakfast. I throw zukes in chilli, soup or some chocolate zucchini bread. I will have to try it baked with some tomatoes on it. Love your videos and the simplistic way its presented. It doesn't have to be complicated :) I have way too many zukes at the moment. I usually pickle, shred/freeze to save them for breads later. Is there another way that you guys preserve them?
