I'm a former figure skater, so the skating analogy made me smile and I think it's spot on.

The cut between 2:54 and 2:55 is killin' me - was that a bathroom break? Did Abbie's dog bark? Or did you just give out the ultimate secret to life and writing and we totally missed out?!! I need to know!

It’s great that you two study the sciences and arts that you mention here. No wonder I was drawn to your channels.

I'm currently struggling with writer's block at the moment. I know what i'm what going to write about but I just can't put it into words. I am also a college student so its kind of hard to focus on my studies and also write. How should I balanced this? Any advice?? Thank you!!

Great video, by the way! I definitely needed to hear that. I'm currently working on an urban sci-fi and I'm struggling to map it out because a lot of the time I just don't feel clever enough to write it. So thank you (as always) for the encouragement. You guys always push me to keep going even when it's hard. Thank you!!

i feel the same way, and I'm writing sci fi with a B-story of romance, and I'm doubting myself so much on the premise! "someone more clever would have made this amazing!" - I just think we need to write it, and then maybe some experts betas can help with the details :) Im sending good writing vibes to you!

I am uninspired, non-inspired, not inspired, and inspiration-less. Finishing up (first draft) my novel, needing to add to the story but I'm STUCK. Planning to start Book 2 for NaNoWriMo so perhaps Kate's suggestions apply to me.

One thing that helps me is listening to music that matches the mood of the story. If I’m writing a sad story or going into a sad scene, I will listen to music that puts me in that state of melancholy, longing, heartache, etc. if I’m writing a story where the main character is an empowered woman about to do something really brave, I’m going to listen to music that makes me feel powerful. This could also be done with watching movies or reading short stories with that same mood. I am working on my memoir on and off, and I have a KZitem playlist of music of songs that remind me of different times of my life. It instantly takes me back to those places mentally, and really helps the writing process. Hope this helps someone!

I will also say I never appreciate the pressure to have this huge word count every time you sit down. I’ll sum it up by saying quality over quantity.

Last reply to my own comment 👀… I don’t believe in writing every day. I feel like at that point it becomes another chore I have to check off my to do list. Days I don’t feel like writing I still do something writing related. I might read, listen to videos like these, look over old pictures and letters to get inspiration for my memoir. To each their own, but I think for some people the writing every day thing just doesn’t work, and makes it feel like more pressure, which strips a lot of the joy out of writing. Obviously if you have a deadline that’s another story, but otherwise I think it’s OK to take a couple of days here and there to do some thing writing related that isn’t actually writing, or just do something that has nothing to do with writing, and give your brain a cleared day off.

I really love this episode, and I 100% agree with what you said about writer's block. If there were any of these tips I would recommend to anyone else, it would be to make sure what you're writing makes you happy. If it doesn't, I can promise you that you will get writer's block. (And yes, I totally speak from experience.) Thanks for another epic episode!

I gave up on NaNo last year because I hated what I was writing so much. I think it’s more important to enjoy the experience than to force yourself through it.

Hey questions! I know or dont assume anyways that either of you are mothers so it may be a difficult question to ask....I dont personally know many writers so maybe you know some writers who are also mothers who can answer...I need to know how some mothers who write write...I mean sure we can wake up earlier then our kids (not always realistic as many mothers need their sleep and lack it already). Also many mothers already do wake up mad early just to start the day. And of course a mother could focus on her writing at night once the children have gone to sleep, but then its a matter of well everyone's kids go to sleep at different times which leave many mothers night owls just to get their craft done or taking away from quality time with the husband ect. Maybe Im simply procrastinating but Im finding it challenging to sit down with no distractions to write. Kids are homeschooled and staying up late is not always an option. Im just feeling a bit defeated at "when do I start and how?" Im able to squeeze in 30 min maybe in the day but Im super distracted and wonder if the writing sucks because I cant fully concentrate. I also dont have the luxury of the kids being out of the home for very long and I have a baby that stays with me even when the other two go out with daddy. Any thoughts?

I agree one’s mind needs to be “free” so to speak, of any ongoing heavy burdens. Personally, feeling burdened is exactly why I haven’t been able to produce what I’ve been needing to. But WTH, that’s my 2020. I realize most everyone’s had a rough year. Tends to stress me out if death is looming or if maybe someone’s acted violently criminal against me/ That’ll do it for me. And even more burdensome when authorities do nothing about it..... 🤔 That’s in addition to my 2 decade doctor dying, finding out my lung disease (actually 2) have progressed so much since February that- well I dunno how much longer I’ll be alive and experts aren’t sure how I’ve managed this long, but anyway- my car got stolen- No place to call “home” anymore... lol It’s been an eventful year. Since April, I’ve had to be in court repeatedly, for someone suing me blah blah blah Uhh if ppl really knew- I do agree with y’all 100% though. I have 2 weeks to get outta this funk. Maybe sometimes it’s okay to just chock it up. Maybe I’ll try that, or yoga. We’ll Couldn’t hurt, at least. Awwwe. Thank you both. Spot on.

I have found that living alone without seeing anyone sharpens my desire to communicate to the point that my creativity blows like an oil well coming in. Subsequently the only problem is the one I began with except as seen from the other end: I mean, how to cap the fuckin’ thing so that I can get a decent night’s sleep.
