Locating underground cables and pipes isn’t only about protecting them so they don’t get damaged when excavation works occur.
Another service we offer is to locate exactly where a buried utility is so that a new underground service can be joined into it.
We do this for water mains, when plumbers want to add a new meter to a house and have to connect a new line from the meter to the water main.
We do this for Telstra or NBN conduits, when someone wants to add internet to their house, but the technician can’t find the pipe or the pit that feeds the house.
And we do it in situations like this one, that we had out in Ivanhoe, where they are building a new verandah and they wanted to connect the new downpipes that are going to be coming off the veranda to the existing stormwater that travels from the house to the main council stormwater drain.
However, no one ever draws up plans of drainage lines for houses. Or if they do, they soon get lost or misplaced.
So to work out the location of where an underground stormwater pipe is, it is normally a bit of a hit and miss.
You can try pot luck and just guess where it could be and dig around, hoping to find it.
Or you can work smarter and hire us to come out and locate exactly where it is. Then once you know precisely where it is you will be able to plan the exact route of where the new drain will be laid.
That is exactly what we did on this job. We drilled an inspection opening into the stormwater line that was coming off the house. We then inserted our camera into the pipe and pushed it down the line.
Doing this we not only were able to get the cable down the pipe which we could then locate, but we also were able to inspect the quality of the pipe itself, which worked out to be very lucky that we did, as the pipe was in pretty poor condition. There were tree roots in it and it was nearly fully blocked. We were able to show the owner of the property the footage from the camera while it was still in the pipe and he will now be able to organise a plumber to come and jet out the pipe. This means he can get on top of this well before it is completely blocked which could have caused major issues to the property.
With the camera in the pipe, we then went and located its position and marked out an ideal spot for the builder to cut into the pipe with his new stormwater pipe that is about to be installed.
