Thank you for this video! This is really interesting, as I have an 18-month-old girl, who we have raised bilingual with (mostly) OPOL since birth. Our combination is also that I am an English native speaker and my husband a German one. We've already seen her starting to use both languages and knowing which to use when - it's so exciting to see!

I love seeing this behind-the-scenes discussion of how you chose OPOL! OPOL is often seen as the "default", but like you said, there's so many different factors that go into this decision. We're raising our son in Mandarin and English and so far so good, but like you, we also know that the Mandarin will be an uphill battle when he enters school. I think with the right family mindset and keeping the language learning a fun and positive experience, bilingual kids will naturally want to maintain both languages as they grow older :)

im american and i hope i have children one day. im a gay guy but am dressed up as a girl in my picture. im definitely gonna raise them trilingually and have a tutor read stories, talk, etc on a tablet. the less my babies are around people the better. i hope it works, i think it will. ill do this the day i bring them home fron the hospital. they actually begin to learn language in the womb and its amazing how much you can improve your brain by feeding it. bilingual babies just after birth show on brain scans they can reconize sounds that their monoligual counterparts cant. ive never found babies cute. theyve always looked scary but whenever i see a baby i know im looking at a genius and am amazed. its crazy how fast they can learn languages and they can master a perfect accent unlike adults. they can easily learn 3 languages in 3 years. children learn languages really fast and forget them really fast. theres kids who move from france and forget french. im black and live in chicago-the most dangerous place in america but a rich white family adopted me. so i speak english with the standard american accent but when i go to the city the blacks are always so amazed at how "proper" i sound. polish is the hardest langage ive seen. each word has 13 different ways you can say it because of the cases. german doesnt have as many. the number two has 22 differwnt ways you can say it and when spelling the three to's in english i always got them mixed up till i was 16. threres three genders like german. polish people speak crazy fast. i think to myself it would be funny if they changed the curriculum entirely to polish in the city schools in chicago. the ghetto blacks would go from speaking a ghetto accent to speaking the worlds hardest language that only white people speak snd speaking a zillion miles per hour🤣🤣

Thank you for your videos. I’m really happy I’ve discovered your channel. I am Greek, my husband is Italian and we are raising our ten months old baby bilingual. Actually, for us it is very important that he learns to speak good English as well. For now I am exposing him to English through English songs. I am afraid of talking to him in English. Do you have a tip for helping him learn English easily?

Amazing! Your baby is so lucky to be growing up with Greek and Italian. I think songs and books are a great way to introduce another language. I have been doing this with Ben in French. There are also some lovely language games you can play once your little one is a tad older and I hope to make a video showing that soon. Thanks so much for watching and sending lots of European love from Scotland! ❤️

It's so nice to get to know more of your language background for the both of you. I've heard quite a bit of families OPOL...but we haven't tried that in our own home, mostly because already being an interracial family, for me, I didn't like the division of "Mommy's language" and "Daddy's language", I think that can be tough in it's own way...so I also try to speak Spanish and do Spanish activities, and we basically go back and forth between Spanish and English throughout our days. I'm sure there will be some confusion of words at times, and not knowing which word belongs in which language, but I figure over time it will tend to sort itself out. We also find that our son has "favorite" words that he always likes to say in English or Spanish. We've noticed that a lot of the English words are easier for him to say, although he understands the Spanish words and responds to them, they are longer. i.e. "fan" in English vs. "ventilador" in Spanish (my son loves ceiling fans, haha, so this is an important word!)

I totally agree that every family is so different, with different backgrounds, and has to do what works for them. It sounds like you have totally found the method that works for you! I do still sometimes sing songs etc with Ben in German and engage in the wider German community when we are there so I hope he will eventually see that both languages can be used by both of us as he grows up. It is definitely a balancing act and there is likely no 'perfect' way to do it but OPOL seems to be working for us so far! :) I also speak French and Spanish so at some point I'd love to expose him to them too. There's so much to learn for us going forward! Thanks for watching and I'll be following your journey too!

Hi 👋 I was born in the uk but our family moved to Germany when I was small. My parents spoke English exclusively with me (their German still isn’t great honestly) and I learned German in kindergarten/school. I am fluent in both now. My husband is German and that’s pretty much the only language he speaks (he understands large chunks of english but doesn’t speak to well). We normally speak German amongst ourselves. We are now talking about starting a family together and I’m trying to learn about how I can raise my child to speak good English. I sadly haven’t been able to meet and Form relationships with other native English speakers near me so I would probably be the child’s only source of English. So I would need lots of aids (tv, radio, ect). I also plan using on the „one parent, one language“ method. I stumbled across bilingual kindergartens around here. I was wondering if you have any experiences with this? Can you recommend some good bilingual Baby books? Love seeing you guys doing this so successfully! Really makes me think that we can make it.

Hello and thanks for reaching out. One parent one language has worked really well for us and it sounds like a great option for you too. Thomas is also the only native German speaker that Ben hears on a regular basis and he is rocking it, so it is entirely possible. Bilingual kindergartens are unfortunately not a big thing in the UK and certainly not near where we live but that sounds like a great option. We also buy books in bulk (at flea markets) when we are in Germany and bring them back home but we do have some great bilingual ones. The company Bi:Libri are great for German/English books and we have their Kleiner Eisbär stories. Good luck when the time comes. Raising a bilingual little one is challenging but so so worth it!

@BairnandaBackpack

Hey! It's definitely a consideration for us and one we review quite often! Luckily his languages are still pretty balanced (he's now 5) although it definitely helps that he goes to school in a 3rd language, Gaelic. I think it helps to stop English becoming too dominant! 😀
