Margret Waithera, the wife of Mau Mau veteran Njagua Mweru of Murang'a, is a veteran in her own right. She took the oath when she was a young girl and served in the war as a messenger; she used to take food to Mau Mau fighters in the forest, while she lived in the concentration villages with her mother. Life in these villages, which were essentially detention camps, was hard. The villagers were forced to do manual communal labour, such as building roads. Those forcing them to do the work were the colonial police and home guards, who beat them at will. She describes how her brother, who was a Mau Mau fighter, and four of his comrades, were shot dead not far from their village. To avoid the cruel home guards, they used to hide in the forest rather than be found at home. She also tells of how colonial security forces were sending planes to broadcast colonial propaganda. The planes would be flying above, calling names of known Mau Mau and asking them surrender. #maumau #africa #kenya #africanliberation #africanhistory
